   Hi all,
I have just (today) acquired a set of part machined Quorn Mk2 grinder castings and associated bits and peices, along with a complete set of drawings.
I also have a cop of the construction articles from ME 1974 by D H Chaddock.

There are a few bits that need some fine tuning to get the construction back on track but overall the workmanship is good.
The downside is, I am now going to be spending a lot of evenings producing the many ball handles required for this project
I was wondering if any of you quorn owners out there can give any useful hints and tips to supplement the build articles or give links to any wesites that detail Quorn construction that would be helpful.

Many thanks (in anticipation )

Graeme (aka coalburner)

Hi Graeme

Try this one!  :-

I think this is an excellent diary and guide and  highlights many pitfalls.
Good luck with those handles!

Regards

Norman

You can buy  handles from Arc Euro (and no doubt elsewhere) at between £2 and £3 each depending on size. They are adjustable to get alignmet right so save a lot of messing about. Unless you are a purist that's the way I'd go

The Yahoo Quorn Owners Group can also be helpful -- see here:

Note that you need to join the Group before you can get access to its archives.

Duncan, thanks but, as I have already machined up a batch of blanks ready for ball turning, I'm going to go the purist route

Joe, I have scoured that group on several occasions and you are correct there is a wealth of information there.

What seems to be missing is any general discussion of pitfalls or things to avoid/change etc.

I would have preferred to use split collets however, as these castings are already part machined, the clamping method is by splitting the casting in most cases, so I think I will carry on with that theme unless anyone out there has a reasonable suggestion to modify this to split collets. I've had a couple of thoughts but they seem to be more trouble than they are worth.

If anyone else is building a Quorn, this chaps website also has a good build diary,

There are also some good pictures of completed Quorns on Tony's lathes website here, http://www.lathes.co.uk/quorn/

cheers all

My Quorn is progressing by leaps and bounds (mostly bounds), does anyone have contact details for Martin Gregory, his much modified Quorn was featured on the cover of MEW Issue 96 and won a silver medal at the Sandown show in 2003.

I have spoken to him on many occasions and admired his implementation of this machine. I would like to incorporate some if not all of his mods into my machine but have no contact details for him.

The last time I spoke with him he was in the process of documenting the Quorn modifications.

Any leads greatly appreciated.

regards

Graeme

G H Thomas' Model Engineer's Workshop Manual says a lot about making the ball handles.

I'd make ones to match mini-lathe handles, much simpler but look almost as good. This one at bottom right on my grinder gives the general idea.

Hi Graeme,

There is a page on my website which may be of interest re ball handle manufacture.

http://www.haythornthwaite.com/Ball%20Turning.htm

It isn't a blow by blow account, but it gives the gist of the process. The main thing is if you are doing a lot, batch them up and do each stage on them all. it saves lots of time. I use the Geo H Thomas method as you will see.

Best of luck,

David

Neil, David,

thanks for the comments etc re: handles, I am already committed (or maybe Ishould be!) to going down the ball handle route, having prepared most of the blanks already along with the necessary holding attachments. Having made the hemingway ball turning kit some time ago, I felt the need to justify its existence laugh.

What I am really after is contact details for Martin Gregory or any info on the modifications he has incorporated into his Quorn, or for that matter any other mods that are useful.

thanks all

Graeme
