Can't find any to match my tools
John Coates | 11/05/2010 22:50:36 |
![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | As I now have my Barker lathe set up I am beginning to practice taking some cuts, experimenting with speeds and cut depths
Obviously I have made a few errors during these learning moments and have half broken one of the tools tips, the one one the knife tool
My set of tools are these:
I have messaged the seller but he has not responded. I took them along to the Harrogate Show but no one had any to match
They are square, measuring 10.2mm per side, with 0 degree relief and a single groove on the top side. They are secured by a detent mechanism, basically an upturned L which is locked by turing 90 degrees
I have spent ages searching online but just can't find anywhere in the UK selling these tips
Can anybody help please?

I don't know whether this will be of use but if you go to the Sandvik UK site they have on line catalogues in pdf format giving details of all of the tips they supply. If you have measurements of your tip pre-damage then it may be possible from this source to identify your tip and get a part number or more importantly a generic type description, tcmt, pcmt, etc. This would at least allow you to source a supply to replace any future breakages.
The Sandvik on line catalogue is broken into sections describing, for want of a better description, tip application i.e turning, grooving etc. I suspect that yours would fall into the grooving/parting off category.
May be worth look if your tool supplier fails to answer.
Cheers

Perhaps Your lathe's cutting tool set is a sub-set or a super-set of my own set which looks very much like Yours. .You can get some information about (my set) in a catalog from Optimum Machines, pages 90 and 91 You can download from the following URL: http://www.optimum-machines.com/fileadmin/Kataloge/Optimum/Catalogue_GB_08.pdf If You find there what You are looking for, then You can buy it in Excel that distributes the Optimum range of machines. Its URL is: http://www.excelmachinetools.co.uk Good luck to You Dias Costa |

![]() 167 forum posts 7 photos | Hi,
KBC Tools in the good old US of A has a fantastic webpage that lists the dimensions of all their products.
Click on the heading on the left 'Carbide Tooling', then choose from the menu and it will open a pdf. with all the details.
The 'Carbide Inserts' page is what you want, although it didn't open just now when I tried it. (Page 247)
What you can do is open a previous or a later page and scroll backwards or forwards using the 'previous page' or 'next page' buttons.
I saved the page that has all the tips dimensions and codes page on my computer so I have a ready check list. Any of the pages can be saved too.
Hope that this is of help.

222 forum posts 7 photos | I was interested in the chart mentioned in the last post but when I clicked on carbide inserts I got a file not found message.
This chart may help you identify you insert. It is the first four letters that are the key to searching further. e.g CCMT is a poular type for many holders sold in the UK but yours sounds like something completey different - i.e S for square N for no relief M (tolerance) N for no hole
Best of luck and hope that helps |

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | Well the seller did get in touch and although he sells the tips, he doesn't have any in stock, so he directed me to the Warco site. There is a set of replacement tips but as the tools look different to mine I've asked him to confirm they are the right ones. Needless to say I'm still waiting for a reply to that question.
Thanks Dias. The Optimum catalogue has something very close to my tips, I've just got to be sure the centre hole is the right size.
Hopefully now I am not far away from getting some tips
Thanks to all for the help and advice

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | Dias - thanks for the link to Excel Machine Tools. They want £33 + VAT + P&P and I only want the square inserts, not a full set so Gulp ! So far I can work out that mine are SN*M (Square, 0 relief angle, single groove with straight through hole) but I'm getting stuck converting the imperial Size and Thickness to metric from my measurements I measure 10mm sides, 3,6mm thick and 4mm hole Is this 303035 ? |

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | Sorry all
Should clarify that what I mean is I am having difficulty relating my metric measurements taken off the carbide tool tip to the imperial references in the standard
Thanks for anyone who can help me. Once I've got the code I can try and find a supplier just for the square tool tips only

141 forum posts 32 photos | Hi John,
As the inserts have zero clearance are they double sided or just single sided for neagtive rake machining?
Any chance of a closeup picture of the insert?

HasBean | 20/08/2010 17:09:08 |
141 forum posts 32 photos | I have the Sandvik Technical Data chart in front of me but without having the insert to hand makes it a tad tricky.
Guessing at;
S Square inset
N Zero clearance angle
M or U Tolerance of inscribed circle (ie don't worry about it)
M Guessing at single sided insert with positive rake held with pin not screw
09 Closest to given measurement at 9.525mm (next is 12 at 12.7mm)
T3 Closest again, T3=3.97mm, 03= 3.18mm
XXXX = Nose radius ie 0.2,0.4,0.8 etc
So could be; SNMM09T304 (for 0.4mm radius) etc
In tha past I have phoned Peter at Greenwood Tools who has been able to supply me with just about any sort of insert in any sort of grade and has been more than helpfull (usual disclaimer)
I seem to remember that you could send Greenwood an insert and they'd be able to identify it for you and suggest an alternative.
Hope I haven't confused things too much

![]() 814 forum posts 36 photos | Ebay is a good source for carbide tips, I have picked up quite a few bargains in the past and often make a suitable holder for the tips. If you are familiar with the nomenclature you can tell the size, shape and tip radius before you place a bid.

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | Hi folks Here is the tool tip - a good one taken off one of the other tools. I have checked my measurements again and found that the top of the square measures 10.05mm per side and the bottom 10.00mm per side so there is a slight rake (clearance). On the underside there is a slight recess (counterbore) around the hole but it is very shallow and I can't measure it Over to you ![]() |

3681 forum posts 70 photos | I have checked a number of manufacturer's list for these sizes and do not find any matches. Either the measured size is wrong, but you have no doubt been careful or else you have been sold some cheap non standard item.If your supplier cannot/will not help then you may have to start again using a reputable source such as Greenwood as mentioned above. |

![]() 558 forum posts 28 photos | KWIL - you may be correct about the cheap non-standard item When I put the codes of the three knife tools into Google (PSSNR1215H09, PSBNR1215H09 AND PWGNR1215H06) I get results for several Chinese manufacturers offering bulk sales (1000+ units) of the nine piece set I bought Going to their websites does provide product numbers for the carbide inserts, namely 41005V, but no UK stockists Seems like my only choice is to replace these tools with better ones where I know I can get replacement tips as well Bugger! More expense when I could be buying metal |

3681 forum posts 70 photos | Regretfully you usually end up getting what you paid for, in this case not a lot. Stick to ISO inserts and buy the toolholders to match. |
