Advert Layout

The Jan 10 edition has the adverts dispersed throughout the copy, with concentrations at either end.  This is a change from the previous practice and to me means that I tend to skip/ miss some ads because I am reading the article.    It suppose it probably makes the layout easier to do as ads can be used as space fillers  rather than having to find short articles, hints and tips as fillers.  It may even have a psychological/ commercial benefit for the advertisers, but if so it's beyond me.

It's not a big thing but I preferred knowing that all the ads were at either end and I could go there and hopefully find what I sought.

What do others think?

I also prefer the ads at the ends, also if you bind the contents you do not really want the ads in the final bound book.

The most anoying thing about the ads  in the centre, for me, is that they obscure the plans or text of the articles.  I suppose I could "rip em out", but I don't like to mutilate my copies which I save for reference.

Actually, I'd prefer the "free plans" to be loose in the mag.  Not stapled over copy of the current  issue.

Hi There
Advertisers want the ads in the inside of the magazine.
I have put them on a four page spread in Model Engineer.
Apart from one set of adverts that got numbered accidently, the advert pages are unumbered so can safely be removed when binding the magazine.
MEW is a slightly different readership and adverts scattered throughout don't appear to be a problem.
Most magazines have adverts in the editorial pages.
regards David

I also have Computeractive and Webuser, both same Publisher and they have adopted the annoying practice of full page advert one side and full page Editorial on the other side. At one time they printed ads on both sides of a page + I just ripped them out, now I`m snookered!
I do tend to read an article, turning the page to find where its continued and ignore the ad. in between.

"Most magazines have adverts in the editorial pages.

But ME didn't.  Just because other magazines do it, doesn't mean you have to do the same.

I like some of the changes you have made - like pictures of contributers - but this isn't one of them.

Hi There
Advertising is decided by the adertising department.
It is not decided on by the editor.
I only get allocated certain pages to fill with editorial.
I have no say where adverts go although I have managed to keep ME to a 4 page spread.
regards david
