20 forum posts 6 photos | Has anybody had any issues with the balance of the countershaft/clutch assembly I have no vibration from the motor on its own (3phase Newton Tesla) but when I put the belt to the countershaft on but with the belt to the spindle off there is vibration The large pulley on the clutch appears to be out of balance. Ie place it in one position and it will move round on its own always stopping in the same spot The problem was much improved when fitting the 3phase motor but the vibration is still there
Thanks for any help or ideas on how to balance it |

![]() 23121 forum posts 1360 photos | So-called ‘Static Balance’ is relatively simple to check and adjust Mount the pulley on a plain shaft and set it on a pair of parallel knife-edges Edit: __ this illustrates the concept, on a smaller scale When it settles: Remove material from the heavy spot [or add weight at the top] Repeat the process until it settles in a different orientation every time you disturb it. MichaelG. . Dynamic Balance [like the tyre shop does] is, of course, more difficult. Edited By Michael Gilligan on 19/04/2023 17:21:28 |

356 forum posts 25 photos | When I got my new s7 (1982) I too had bad vibration. It came from the primary drive belt whipping. A call to myford and it seems this was a common problem which they couldn’t test at the factory cos in those days the lathe came with no motor, chuck or much else! It was completely cured when they supplied a brammer line belt which I used until fitting a vdf and 3 phase 25 years ago, when the motor drive pulley diameter was changed to stop excessive motor speed and vdf frequency with high speed turning |
