Hi All,

Found this peculiar boxed set of wooden craft tools in a lot yesterday.

Have no idea what they are used for, any help appreciated!

Yes it does look like the sort of thing used in sugarcraft or baking.

That might depend on what is in the envelope

I might have thought more needlecraft / sewing / lacemaking. Stuffing soft toys?

I've seen the 'bear ladies' on Repair shop use long wires to stuff wadding etc. 'Rolling pin' to flatten felt etc.

A very random guess though to be honest.

They might be for making those shapes to stick onto mirror frames etc, as decoration.

A sort of putty was used and moulded, then allowed to dry and harden. Then they were glued onto the wooden frame and the whole thing painted. The result looked like carved wooden pieces, but were much quicker and much less labour intensive to make.

Lots of complex shapes were made this way - leaves etc. "Salvage Hunters: The Restorers" often feature a sculptor and a lady who restores mirror frames, and they both mould decoration pieces in this way to give the appearance of carved items.

Having said all that, it seems odd that only a couple of moulds are in this particular kit. It could instead have been used to mould sweets perhaps?

The wee jobbers with a ball on each end are just like metal equivalents used by pattern makers for rubbing down leather fillet, or smoothing polyester filler for making fillets. I have a coupleof home made ones for that purpose. I am still pre 3D printing.

Not a clue!

Judging by the number of pieces, I suspect it may be components from more than one craft.

For a moulding set, I would expect to see more moulds. Although they could have been lost over time. What look like diagonal holes in the moulds, look a bit strange.

Like MJ1, the only things that look familiar, are what appear to be fillet smoothers.

Have a look for videos for making Purple Clay or Yixing Teapots.

Unfortunately I've not been able to find one to embed here from Youtube, which shows the dimple behind the spout, but I saw this one on Facebook earlier; I'm guessing you will need an account to view it though.
The Facebook one shows a glass version of the ball ended tool in use, just after 2½ minutes.

I wonder if these might be tools for potters in the UK/Europe

Even if not, it's an interesting video anyway
