I have a warco 290 and need to fit a Vertex 4 jaw chuck 125mm. Does anyone know if a 280 backplate as sold on warco website at 125mm would fit the spindle of the 290? I don’t really want to machine down the 290 backplate from 160 to 125 if the 280 125mm backplate fits leaving only the front face register for the chuck left to machine.

Could depend on your backplate fixing, I've seen 290s with nuts & washers, keyhole plates and D1-4 mount

If it's a stud and nut type my gut feeling is the bore of the backplate will need to be larger on the 290 due to it being 38mm bore and MT5 rather than the smaller 26mm bore and MT4 of the 280

It is the stud and nut type and therefore suspect from your details that the hole spacing and bore will be different. Many thanks.

I'll check mine in the morning but think the hole is 52 or 54mm

Andy

I think as Jason says they are different. If you look on the Warco website there are drawings with dimensions for the various size chucks. **LINK**

Stuart, it's the part machined backplates Andy is interested in which are then machined to suit whatever chuck is being used.

The premachined hole in a 280 backplate is 52mm dia and the studs which could always be redrilled are on a 75mm PCD (roughly measured and calculated) and I suppose you could also bore it out to fit your 290.

I'd be tempted to get a slice of 130mm EN3 for about £10 and machine that up to a nice fit on your spindle nose, put the £40 saved to something else

Thanks Stuart - it is the spindle fixture element as Jason has stated that I am interested in. Thank you Jason for your response and detail. I had hoped they would be the same but they aren’t having just taken some quick measurements. The EN3 idea is one to ponder - more workshop time required. Thanks for all the responses.

Warco will be open, again, tomorrow morning. Simplest is to get the information directly from the “horse’s mouth”?

You won’t be getting it any sooner?

He has the info now from me and can get on with sorting out an alternative as the 280 plate won't fit a 290 so he is a day ahead.
