Agricultural supplies

If as I do live out in the country you might be a good way from a town where you can pick up small items you need "NOW". Adding time and fuel can make it expensive.

Agricultural supplies carry a good stock of nuts, bolts, rods and tools. Also generally tend to be cheaper than some high street suppliers. I needed 2 grub screws for my Chester lathe. The screws came free and I just had to pay for the sheets of wet and dry,

Yes that's true ! Also for model engineers the chainsaw file is both cheap at about £2.50 and very good. They start at about 3mm dia and go upto 6mm or so, though often in imperial! I always have them to hand. Noel

I often make purchases from agri outlets. Don’t go to the ‘computerised’ spare parts desk as your first choice - many smaller, local agricultural engineers are often a better bet. Many bods behind those ‘parts computers’ are just that - computer bods.

I am lucky in that a friend runs an agri-business and I help him out occasionally.🙂. He buys in lubricants, anti-freeze, batteries, etc in larger sizes/numbers.

Alas, you have to have one nearby to benefit. Used to be one just down the road from me and it was wonderful for all sorts of outdoor stuff, not just tools and ironmongery. Sadly it closed down and next nearest is 30 miles away cross-country: mostly back lanes, and it takes an age to drive there and back.

Local one was a good source of imperial threads, but they went all metric. But a good source none the less. often use them.

I got a nice 7 foot 5-bar gate with uprights, anchor bolts, hinges and furniture from a local agricultural supplier for about 1/3 the price posh sidegate companies wanted.

I wanted pull-cord door-stays for my internal door to the garage, and got them from an agri supplier - you'd never find 'em at B&Q or any DIY chain.
