Lathe Move

Hello,

I’m looking to buy a lathe but it’ll need picking up from near Heathrow and transporting and moving into my garage in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as I need to move the lathe one week after the sale ends.
I’ve contacted Landylifts but I know he’s always busy so I’m looking for alternatives.

Home and workshop machinery are in Sidcup, they might share the name of their shipper.

If its on a pallet, then Pallet Ways is who you are looking for. An old friend of mine has had lots of machines moved by by them. For us, its some where on Teeside, maybe nation wide. John.

Many thanks for your suggestions. I’m going to inspect the lathe at the weekend, if all’s ok I’ve a week to sort transportation.

Have never needed ti use them, but Landylift seem to have a good reputation.

Weighing near enough a ton, it6 will need care in lifting, transporting and siting.

Got my 1024 picked up from Birmingham and delivered to Northampton about 2 months ago.

I used a guy in Birmingham who is not a machinery mover as such, but does a bit of everything. I was happy enough to give him a decent tip as he took the time to plonk it in the right place at my end.

Book weight is 1200kg, many movers won't go over a tonne. Luke's wagon / lorry and hiab did it no problem, only struggling with the arm extended.

Luckily the seller supplied 2 bars to fit through the lifting holes in the base, much better than lifting off the bed.

That's a very heavy machine to move if it is 2200lbs. I would hang the expense and get a proper industrial machine tool mover in for the job. If you trust it to a pallet courier then ten to one they will drop it and it will be worth nothing. Check out the YouTube videos of these clowns trying to shift a Colchester on a pallet, not even strapped down so no wonder it toppled. I have a Bantam in my garage that I bought from a guy who had some idiot of a pallet courier try to move and managed to topple it. It's only taken me twenty-years to source the parts and make the repair!

I had to move a couple of heavy cylindrical grinders a few years ago and used a reputable local haulier who had a flat back with a very heavy duty HIAB. It all went well but I was there every minute of the loading and unloading just to make sure. If you can find a competent carrier they will sometimes shift part loads if they have several customers in the areas of the collection and delivery points but you would probably have to wait until a suitable situation arose.

Wise words.
Steve at Landylifts is only doing local jobs due to other work commitments. I’m waiting for a couple of quotes from professional machinery movers based in the Midlands so we’ll see where that leads.
