Scrap aluminium for casting

Why do I get a message saying my browser doesn´t support cut and paste ? Of course it supports cut and paste. I use it every day.

I have been given a Hyundai gear box, primarily for the aluminium content. There is even some bronze. I´m thinking of casting some loco bits. Does anyone have any thoughts on the quality of the aly used in these? I had asked about pistons, but they didn´t have any.

Hi Peter, First and foremost make sure it IS alli, unlikely but possible for it to be magnesium. The best plan is to do a simple trial and see what happens ! What do you know about casting ? what parts do you want to cast ? Noel.

Aluminium wheels provide good quality material. Gearboxes and other car related parts are also good. Just don't go for parts of speciality engines, avoid magnesium"

If you put vinegar on magnesium it will fizz! In fifteen years of melting scrap I have never had a magnesium fire.

HaHa ! I remember we used to have to do that years ago. I´m so used to right clicking that I had forgotten that it used to have to be done that way. Just realised that there is something funny with auto correct, too.

Not just this forum. It's a counter-measure that plugs a nasty security loophole.

The problem with mouse clicks is they can be misused by a program downloaded from the net. Hackers abuse remote control mouse clicks in devious ways to penetrate your computer and also to attack any website you connect to. Security concious browsers disable mouse cut-and-paste by default, on others they're left active until the user decides to block them

Mouse clicks are only a security problem for web browsers and email clients set to allow HTML. Ctrl-V and ctrl-C are safe because they can only be typed on your keyboard by a human. Or a cat...

Magnesium is lighter and stronger, but not cheaper ! If it ignites it will be an almost unstoppable fire as the metal oxidises and produce a white light and great heat. Noel.

Re magnesium, I remember we used to have a lump of it salvaged from a German incendiary bomb. Great fun was had by shaving bits off and throwing them on the coal fire...
