Using 1mm cutters on a Viceroy miller.

2 forum posts 2 photos | Could someone please advise me on how I would go about attaching a 1mm cutter to this machine. It takes the Clarkson S Type collets with threaded cutters but I can't find any as small as 1mm. I look forward to any replies.

115 forum posts 30 photos | If it's a one off thread the end of a bit of silver steel (outside diameter same as one of your collets) and drill a 1mm hole in the other end and loctite a 1mm bit in (when, rather than if, you break it warm with a blow lamp and get the broken bit out...) There are stacks of ER11 collet holders on ebay and the like, put one of those in a collet and tighten it up... Then you can hold any size of small drill or cutter The odds of it getting pulled out by a 1mm drill are small The truth is that you will struggle to do 1mm holes with your machine, it doesn't go fast enough and raising the knee will require a lot of subtlety not to break the drill... I too have a heavy weight machine and it's hard work with small drills (at least they are cheap!) |

ARC & WARCO both do one with a 1/2" shank, and there are instructions on the web as to how to make one. Hold that in a suitable collet in the machine. It will give you the ability to down feed the drill by 10-15mm as well as holding it. Although the speeds will still be slow. |

![]() 2376 forum posts 800 photos | Read the question guys! The OP is looking for a milling cutter. My solution would be to get a 1mm end mill with a 6mm Weldon shank and put this in a Weldon to Clarkson threaded adapter. Milling with cutters this small is possible with a knee only machine (like mine) with care. It looks like the maximum speed of the mill is 3000rpm which is slightly faster than mine, so definitely worth a try. HTH, Rod |

...My solution would be to get a 1mm end mill with a 6mm Weldon shank and put this in a Weldon to Clarkson threaded adapter. Is this the same thing that is known as an FC3 cutter? And a Clarkson FC3 adaptor? To the OP: see for background this thread: https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=76239 |

It looks like the maximum speed of the mill is 3000rpm which is slightly faster than mine, so definitely worth a try. I wouldn't bother without a spindle speeder and they do occasionally come up second hand. 3mm is pushing it on a manual mill, trying to cut with a 1mm cutter would be pissing in to the wind, but then people use face mills in little Chinese mill drills. |
