2” Durham and north yorkshire

Hello, does anyone happen to have a picture of a completed split ring for the sliding high and low speed gear selector, the one that clamps around the gear hub. I have made one only to find it’s no good and John hainings drawing of the component is not much good. I’m a time served fitter machinist and read machining drawings every day but I’m struggling with some of these sketches. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Also if anyone has any pictures of their build I would love to share or swap some pictures.

The Haining s/c ploughing engine that he designed at the same time has a fork of 7/8" radius with 3/8" straight bits passed the radius centre on both sides. So open at the bottom.

from memory it should look like this. sorry for the poor drawing but can't get veto the engine to take photo.

Thanks very much guys I can see where I went wrong now. Did you all make the selector from one piece or did you all solder the flat brackets onto the back of the ring as the instructions say?

anyhow here is where I am up to on my build. It’s taken a few years now because of work commitments and being a tight yorkshire I refuse to buy any castings. Everything has been made from scratch or fabricated, including the steam chest. All the gears are made as are all the wheels, the next major part will be the tender for the coal, after I get this damn selector ring

Mine is 4”. It was easy to make individual parts and use cap heads to fix it together. They are hidden.

The bow fork is actually a bit narrow. I made it out if 6mm plate instead of 1/4”. To take up the slack i made brass buttons and pressed them into each half bow.

I silver soldered the parts together, it could be done from one piece.

Hello Richard,

I made my selector ring by simplifying the Haining design. Hopefully the photos will make this clear. I made it with the two half rings bolted to a fabricated back plate with the pin integrally attached. When in high gear, the pin engages with a little brass slide attached inside the gear guard. This stops the tendency for the ring to swivel forward which can cause the gear to jump out of mesh.

I can offer a list of other minor modifications which I have made on my engine, to overcome various problems with the Haining design. Maybe you have not yet made some of these bits and you can pick up what looks useful.

Thanks for the pictures Paul your method looks interesting and I might give it a go . I’m interested in some of the modifications you might have made as it gets a bit annoying when after spending hours making parts exactly to drawing I find that they don’t fit or don’t look right.

On another note has anyone else had trouble posting pictures on this sight using an iPad . I have tried to post pictures of my engine on here the other day but I can’t fathom out how to do it.

Yes it’s a steel boiler that I made myself. It’s made from high grade boiler tubing as used on an actual steam turbine.

I made the wall of the boiler shell slightly thicker to allow for any rust erosion. It’s been tig welded and then pressure tested with water to 250psi with no problems . Everything on the engine has been built from scratch.
