I realise it’s there to aid manufacturing but why do some manufacturers leave the point on whilst others grind it off? Just wondering!

Cost of removal?

Aid to holding for sharpening?

Not long ago, I need to tap some 5 x 0.5 mm holes, only 3.5 mm deep, so the tap was ground to a flat end. Fortunately, it worked O K despite having no lead in chamfer.

Depending on size of tap either a centre hole or a point is left by the manufacturer. They are there so that the tap can be accurately aligned on a tool and cutter grinder for resharpening.

Generally speaking the smaller sizes have point tip so you need something like a cone to aid aligning.

the bigger ones have hole so you can use a tap follower.

answer is simple: there is no room to centre drill the little ones.

So you can use it as a dot punch.
