7227 forum posts 21 photos | Cost of removal? Aid to holding for sharpening? Not long ago, I need to tap some 5 x 0.5 mm holes, only 3.5 mm deep, so the tap was ground to a flat end. Fortunately, it worked O K despite having no lead in chamfer. Howard |

1817 forum posts 2 photos | Depending on size of tap either a centre hole or a point is left by the manufacturer. They are there so that the tap can be accurately aligned on a tool and cutter grinder for resharpening. Andrew. |

33 forum posts 48 photos | Generally speaking the smaller sizes have point tip so you need something like a cone to aid aligning. the bigger ones have hole so you can use a tap follower. answer is simple: there is no room to centre drill the little ones.
