Good way of attaching instructions to a painted surface

I have made a piece of kit for a railway modeller friend who is not mechanically minded at all. I need to permanently fix the printed (by me ) instructions to the 3" painted ally cylinder which is the outer case. I need to fix the paper permanently to the case and then protect it from a degree of ham fistedness!

I recently discovered that you can get water slide decal paper for your inkjet. Apparently print what you want, spray with clear spray varnish and put on like the old fashioned water transfers.

You could put another couple of costs of varnish over it after it has dried.

Laminate the printed instructions and use thin double sided tape to fix it in place. I use this method to produce control panel overlays etc with good results.

+1 for this, I recently acquired a tractor and trailer for my 14 month old grandson and the stickers on them have come off, his name is Oliver and there was a company who built tractors called Oliver so I'm making new transfers for the tractor, I've already made names for his drinking bottles at Nursery which worked out well.

I suggest trapping the printed label using a length of the heatshrink tubing commonly used to encapsulate cells to make up battery packs.

It is thin walled, has a high shrink ratio and is available in several colours and in pre-shrunk diameters up to about 150mm, (clear is one of the colours)

If you search for battery, pack, heat, shrink you will find lots of sellers

You can get sticky back encapsulation pouches

For a similar job I used Waterproof Plastic self adhesive labels [Polylaser] that were printed with a Laser Printer.

Find them on E bay or Amazon or even local office suppliers
