Hi Philip,

Are you sure the clamp is not some form of puller ?

That type of vice can still be bought - Proops sell them as "Work Holder Hand Vice with Wooden Handle, 6mm Wide Jaw Opening, Jewellery Making Tool. H4106"  I bought one a few years ago and they are very useful for holding small parts securely.

On the MoD apprenticeship at Boscombe Down we had to make something similar, but a cube rather than an octagon. Mine was easily, easily, the worst made one in the room.

I read years ago a biography of Geoffrey de Havilland who founded the aircraft company of that name, who was an RAF apprentice, or maybe it was RFC in his day. Apparently they had to make a mating nut and bolt from steel, using hammer, cold chisel and files, as an exercise. Now that would be a challenge!
