Good morning,

I joined the forum to learn tips on how best to use my Myford ML7, but stumbled on this area of the forum and, as classic bikes are a big passion of mine, thought I would share my latest project with you.

Cheers,

Christian

When I was about 12~13 'we' (our little gang) got Vellocette MAC that had been in 'storage' (dumped in a coal shed) for about 30 years.

There was also a BSA C10L with it

Well, 'we' got them going and learned a bit about AMAL carbs, Dowty 'oiliomatic' forks, plunger suspension and running old side valve motors on paraffin (the BSA)

After the owner found out they were runners, he wanted them back and donated them to local tech (probably something else going on?)

My father had a complete running Ariel NH he 'sold' us for ten bob and great fun was had by all

I worked on a different NH probably 30 years later, wish we had known just how stupid prices would get.

As someone with a passion for old pre-war bikes I agree prices are getting stupid. However give it another 5 or 10 years and I believe prices will tumble. Most folk who want these machines are like me in their 70s. Not many younger chaps have any desire to own and work on the older stuff.

I have a 56 MAC and it is a lovely bike to ride it won't win any races but starts easily (without the rituals) and the clutch is the best I have ever come across, light smooth action, but it took me two weeks solid work to get it right, shims were missing, thrust pins wrong length, spring length too long, warped clutch plate, once all the parts were correctly fitted and the clutch set up as per book it's a joy to use

I feel the same way as you Chris another 5 to 10 years will see a big a change in values so my plan is to reduce the number of bikes I have over the next 3 to 4 years, I hope to keep riding until I am 75 although I can't ride the Triton anymore, clip ons and rear set don't suit a 71 year old plus some are getting a tad heavy, but I do love two wheels.

A mate of mine once had an MOV in a MAC frame. He had the alloy barrel, but still had the cast iron head on it while he searched for an alloy head, it did look weird.

Funny you say that Mart the bike in the photo had cast iron cylinder and it should be alloy, I rebuilt the engine using the iron cylinder as you can see but an alloy one came up for sale on ebay complete with piston, I bought it and fitted it, and engine runs sweet as a nut and it also looks correct.

I loved my Velocettes however! This is a photo of me at 18 on my first Velo. I painted the frame metallic powder blue. The tank was sprayed pillar box red with white signwriting. The seat was upholstered in a padded white materiel with red piping. The bike was finished with a Cibié headlight clip on's and rear sets. I'm now taking cover before the purists attack.

Veloce certainly did things their own way. I've spent a lot of time over the last couple of years working on a 1920s KTT. It took forever correcting all the 90 years of bodging incorrect parts. Camshaft bevel shimming was "interesting".

Joe Craig down the road at Norton must have had a wry smile when he saw the Velo way compared to the Norton. Or is it because I have played with the cammy Norton before ?

Hi A Velocette fan from way back I spotted this hybrid one parked. The owner had fitted an overbored to 499cc KSS motor into a MSS frame.

My school bike when I was 17. It used to spray oil out of the open sided rocker covers. It was a 350. I wonder what it would be worth now.
