Why not go for a V engine of some kind, or even a radial, any of those would look better in a model than an in line 2 cylinder compression ignition engine.

I would think there could be 50 to 100 hours work in one, being a two stroke, but hard to tell without seeing drawings.Could easily be more.

I bill my time out at $100 an hour. So that would come to $5,000 to $10,000 and upward.

Plus there would be the initial cost of buying the raw castings, if they are even still availbable? Otherwise, as much again to make patterns and cast crankcases, cylinders and heads etc.

Be very aware, original Tappy crankcases were carp, easy to strip cylinder screws (Them into crankcase)due to poor aluminium. Original 7cc., later ones I think were about 15cc. Basic original was two ED Hunters strapped together. Descriptions of all ED (Col. Taplin) designs can be found online, search ED - Electronic Developments.

Wow thanks guys for the fast reply,

So I'm not going to get one made... (cost)

The model that I would be putting the engine in is a Radio Queen, the original plans are Col Taplin so that's why I'm after a Taplin twin..

The one in the link looks like a marine boat version I will email and see if it can be converted..

I shall keep hunting on ebay

Thanks all for your help and input

Best regards Mike

What does your local mechanic or plumber charge per hour?

Local motorbike dealer here charges $120 per hour.

I stick with a nice round number.

Have a replica 3D modelled and bung an electric motor in, in/out runners don't leave your hands with the "Three day Caster oil" stink. Ah yes, I remember it well, AND the finger scars.

Regards Ian.

The carank case does not look to be too complex for anyone wanting to carve it out of solid which would be viable if you were making your own but just adds to the cost if having one made. I'll have to find out if the Motorboy I know has any castings in his collection, may not all be originals but he has a lot of his own diecast ones of the old engines.

Min wage equivalent to $18 per hour ... Plumbers are $35 / 40 per hour average where we are. If you live in London then a higher figure applies.

You are getting mixed up between wages and labour charges. Huge difference.

A quick web check shows average labour charge by a UK car dealership for their mechanics' services is about 70 Quid per hour. So I am sure machine shop time is billed at a somewhere similar rate. And good luck finding a plumber who will come to your house for $35 (17 Quid).

I quoted my regular rate, as the OP requested. If you can do better, all the best to you.
