I'm looking for a couple of metres of 10mm / 3/8th (not critical) square bar in alpha brass. I've looked at the usual suspects, but I've found it only in sheet form - presumably for spinning or stamping.

Does anyone know where bar can be had in small quantities?

Robin

This guy sells steelstock at the fairs & autojumbles in small lengths. Not sure if he will have what you require but worth a shot. Blenco Metals of Doncaster. 07802 217117. He has an ebay shop I think too.

Steve - thanks, but looking at his eBay shop it seems that he stocks only CZ121 in brass.

DC31k - l've emailed Thames Stockholders asking if they can supply in small quantities - they are obviously geared up for industrial supply, but maybe...Thanks for the find.

Adrian - no worries, thanks for taking the time to reply.

It's weird that it's so hard to track this stuff down. When I were a lad (half a century ago!) CZ108 (67/33) was called 'common brass'.

If you need a couple of metres, then one standard stick of bar (3m) should be OK . I would be inclined to call them and see what is their most popular line in this material and to whom or the type of customer to whom they sell it. Then if the order is too small for them, you have some leads. You may end up up having to buy something of bigger cross section and cut it down.

This may be a stupid idea, but what about buying sheet, melting it down and casting it into bar?

Emgee - thanks for the link. It looks like they hold only CZ121, but worth asking them.

DK31k - I'll ask metalsupplies.com what they've got. I'm OK with cutting larger section down, and they are in my neck of the woods, so I could pick the stuff up - my (limited) experience with industrial stockholders is that they're more willing to deal with small quantities if collected. Again, thanks for the find.

The remelting/casting idea had occurred to me too, but I don't have the kit or experience.

Just for the record - Thames Stockholders advise that at this size CZ108 is specified only in sheet. They have 3/8" in stock and seem willing to let me have a piece which I can cut down to size.

Sorted.
