Stepper rating for Triac upgrade?

Hi all,

I am finally getting round to upgrading my Denford Triac to being usable, I have spotted some closed loop steppers on ebay from Longs Motors. Would 5Nm be ok for X and Y, and 9Nm for Z?

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Hi Mark, compare them with the size/power output of the originals, allow a little over that for the retrofit.
The sizes quoted seem to be more than adequate for the job but ensure you have working limits on all axis before use.

Hi Emgee, many thanks for your reply. A Google search did bring up a Denford PDF showing the holding torques on the Triac. For X and Y their motors give 193Ncm, and 700Ncm for Z. So as you suggested the motors I found should be plenty, especially as they are closed loop.

Good idea about the limit switches though!

I did mine years ago. I can't remember what specs mine were but since a 12nm is raising the knee of my bridgeport clone I can't see you having any trouble at all with the motors you have suggested. I don't see any point in spending the extra money on servos unless you want to terrify yourself watching the thing fly around in a blur.

Does your triac have the tool changer?

It sounds like I'm playing it well on the safe side by all accounts! Did you CNC your Bridgeport, or just power the knee?

My Triac must be one of the earlier models as it does not have the tool changer.

My Triac has the original steppers, performs very well. If yours is unusable I would suggest that the problem could be with the electronics rather than the motors.
