![]() 55 forum posts 58 photos | Good morning guys and dolls, I am refurbishing a Southbend 13" lathe and it needs complete replacement of the wicks and felts, can anyone steer me towards a supplier, I also need a parts/disassembly/reassembly manual if there is such a thing. Any info would be great and appreciated. |

This one is a 1938 supplied to the Ministery of supplies for the war effort and was on a Royal Navy ship for many years before ending up in a goverment test station. I have included some pics if you want to check my albums. |

1486 forum posts 105 photos | Steve Wells' website is pretty much the go-to repository for South Bend info and literature. How much of a refurbishment are you doing? I'm currently renovating a Heavy 10. Bed and saddle re-ground, all the other ways re-scraped. Full strip and rebuild of the rest of the mechanicals and of course re-painted all over.

If you are cutting your own felts, I can supply the material (thick ex-papermaking felt). Edited By ega on 25/11/2018 12:01:42 |

Edited By Pete Rimmer on 25/11/2018 11:55:06 Ground up strip and rebuild, repair as and when needed, no regains or scrape, new paint and I will be keeping it and selling my other lathe which is more suited to a model maker which I an not. |

I don't blame you for not wanting to grind the bed, it's quite expensive and now that Brian's retired I don't know who else I'd take it to. For sure though I would give serious consideration to working over the cross slide and compound ways. I don;t think I've ever seen a used lathe more than a few years old that didn't need some kind of attention to the minor ways. |

I will have to do some work as you say on the minor ways but the lathe will not be needed to work to 2/10ths |

Edited By Pete Rimmer on 25/11/2018 11:55:06 +1. I'd use this guy. Very helpful, has all the common consumables, parts lists, and his own very good rebuild manuals. The go-to-guy on 9-14" Southbends. |
