Gary, that would be good, is there room on a 2a to cut a long one, alternatively how much would you charge to make one for me. |
13/08/2019 16:29:47 |
Have considered that, seem to remember some one on here saying the long version were made of aluminium, does that sound right, |

Lovely job, Bill I'm sure it will be a delight to use. MichaelG.
Many thanks, When I first researched the machine it said it left the factory in its bare metal finish due to the quality of the casting and materials used,Having restored it I have been blown away by the quality of the cast iron they used and the precision.

Well it is finally finished and standing proud in my workshop, I have to say its been a source of great pleasure bringing this master piece of Swiss precision back to its former glory, all that is needed now is to permanently fix the motor to it, this will probably be a variable speed DC unit that is small and compact. I have included pics of the finished machine in my albums so if your interested take a look. Thanks to all for the helpful comments and advise. I can concentrate on the South Bend 13" lathe project which I acquired last month . |
Thread: Thread Wires. |

When i was in the training school at RollsRoyce we were taught to do and check everything the proper and accepted way, that included thread cutting etc and the use of wires and micrometer to check them, in later years I realised that it was not always needed to use wires but in my opinion it is always best to know how to use them and not need them than to need them and not know how to use them. |

Hi Bill I have one here of about the right size but missing the curved "boat" piece. You're welcome to it for the P&P if you're too far to collect. I'm in Shropshire. That would be a great help, I am near Northwich but i have several relatives up that way, where abouts are you. |

Bill York: I believe that the lantern or American toolpost is "correct" for the SB: its principle is rather like the old Myford Quick Set tool boat. I see from your album that you are making progress. Is that blue-grey the standard SB "color"? No, it is Rust-oleum anthrasite it is the coulor i use on all my restorations. |

I made one for the Boxford. Fun little project. Thought about that also but I do not have access to a milling machine and dont fancy all the filing involved producing the slot. did you also make the wedge.

Hi folks, I am looking for a lantern type tool holder suitable for a 13" SB lathe. The lathe came with a few Armstrong holders and as lot of tips but no post, so if anyone has one they would part with drop me a pm. Thanks. |

Steve Wells' website is pretty much the go-to repository for South Bend info and literature. How much of a refurbishment are you doing? I'm currently renovating a Heavy 10. Bed and saddle re-ground, all the other ways re-scraped. Full strip and rebuild of the rest of the mechanicals and of course re-painted all over.
Edited By Pete Rimmer on 25/11/2018 11:55:06 Ground up strip and rebuild, repair as and when needed, no regains or scrape, new paint and I will be keeping it and selling my other lathe which is more suited to a model maker which I an not. I don't blame you for not wanting to grind the bed, it's quite expensive and now that Brian's retired I don't know who else I'd take it to. For sure though I would give serious consideration to working over the cross slide and compound ways. I don;t think I've ever seen a used lathe more than a few years old that didn't need some kind of attention to the minor ways. I will have to do some work as you say on the minor ways but the lathe will not be needed to work to 2/10ths |

South Bend wicks are much larger than 1/4" Either 7/16" or 1/2" I didn't measure mine but they are quite fat with a spring around them. Yes the SB spindle oiler is about 1/2" x 4" and as you say have a spring action that keeps the hard felt tip in contact with the spindle. |
