I wonder if there are many out there who have looked at lightning maps.org? It's a real time display of lightning strikes across Europe and the USA. I find it fascinating, especially when a storm is in my area. My question is, what is the time ticking down on the top left of the screen? One is the time since the last strike, but to its left is another countdown going on with no explanation as to what it means. I can't find a reference to it on the site. Does anyone have any idea please?

regards Maurice

I think one is the rate in strikes per minute and the other is the delay between when a strike happens and it appears on your map.

I've been tempted to make a sferic detector for years.

Blitzortung.org is a network of volunteers with detectors who 'power' lightningmaps.org.

There's also a Blitzortung android app.

Fascinating site. I look at it whenever there is a storm in the area but there seems to be a problem at the moment, there is a red notice saying "Work in progress. Some features might not work". sad

I signed up to be on the waiting list for the lightning detector hardware that feeds into the Blitzortung/lightningmaps.org website.

Signed up in July 2014, where there were approx 1500 people on the list. Now I am at no.35, the list has grown to 4500. It grew quickly after the site was featured on national news channels...

There's always the Met Office site where you can see real time accurate data regarding lightning and other weather related information. Lightning data can be seen here along with cloud cover, rainfall etc all in real time.
