In B&Q today I noticed they have started stocking oak 'stripwood', also mdf.

The sizes and quality looked good for things like making frames for model bases, but remember steel will rust and brass tarnish if in contact with oak.

'Tain't always that bad. My 24-pounder naval cannon has a European oak carriage, unvarnished at the contact points with the steel trunnions and cap squares, and there's no visible rust after about 16 years.

Thanks for the heads-up on the stripwood - I'd been looking for thinnish hardwood to make stuff out of with the little jigsaw I just got from Lidl.
