May I congratulate Terrence Holland on his excellent well researched articles on the battlefields of WW I. The statistics were fascinating and thought provoking. You can see why it was called the Great War with the millions of munitions that were fired and that has left a legacy that still has a devastating impact on today.

I thought it very good too - and all the better for being a little unexpected in ME.

Apparently the money spent by Germany on WW1 was sufficient to have bought the whole of France on the open market : land, industry, resources, commerce, art, transport - everything.

WW1 cost Britain even more. We borrowed on a gigantic scale and the final loan wasn't paid off until 2015. Ouch.

+1. The narration by Laurence Olivier is outstanding.
