My ML4 currently has a leather and steel link type belt on it but as i want to move the layshaft back a bit I will need a new belt. The first photo below shows the layshaft pulleys. They are about 1/2 inch wide at the outside edge and about 1/4 inch at the bottom.

The photo below is of the driven pulleys on the mandrel. They are very similar to the layshaft pulley with the dimensions being only very slightly smaller than those on the layshaft.

I would like to know what section vee belt I need please. I think it is called A section ? If anybody has recommendations for a suitable adjustable linked type belt that would be useful thank you.

Nige,

Details for v belts can be found in Tubal Cain's ME Handbook section 13. The width at the top for A profile is given as 13.29mm.

Hope that helps.

Hugh

Thanks Hugh. my measurement of 'about 1/2 inch' is probably quite close but I will check more closely tomorrow.

Fenner Twist Link is good. I use it on my Super 7. You can get it from RS at a price but there may be other sources.

Aha! Lathes.co.uk stock it:

Actually I may have got mine from there. I use it both on my lathe and VM-B milling machine.

Hi Nige, some guidance on measuring pulleys can be found in this **LINK** and belt sizes can be found by using the R/H arrow.

Regards Nick.

I do not think they would work on a Tri-Leva assembly, if I remember rightly you need a smooth outer surface on the back of each belt for the tensioning rollers to press against.

You could probably use a link belt on the drive from the motor to the idler (counter shaft?) pulley though.

V8Eng, double-drat, yes now you mention it - of course. Ah well, was hoping to avoid taking it all apart. Thanks
