1481 forum posts 149 photos | There is a thread which deals with ‘good service’ by particular vendors. So, I thought of starting this thread as an appreciation of contributions made to this forum by particular persons. One should name the person, and state the reasons for the suggestions. WHO and WHY. So, to start this thread off, WHO: Michael Gilligan WHY: His knowledge on theory, searching out links to patents and information, and presenting such information on here for consideration and debate. All of us can use search engines, but how many of us have the time, and sometimes the ability to think of the search term, or place to look for the information?. This help especially amplifies when Michael reaches out to beginners who would otherwise fail to receive any response. His contributions keep the threads on forums active. Michael recently mentioned that he would stop posting. If he does, I believe that it would be a sad loss, for this forum. What do others think? There are many such characters on this forum, and if one wishes to acknowledge their contributions, I guess that this a good place to say so, as well as add your thoughts. Ketan. |

![]() 1129 forum posts 1 photos | Ketan, I totally second your views above, Michael has often been of huge help to me and I shall certainly miss his contributions. While he is no stranger to pedantry, I really value most of his insights and humour and IMHO the forum will be a lesser place for his absence. Martin |

Great idea Ketan.... On another forum I frequent, they have a 'bouquet' section where members can post their appreciation for help- assistance.....maybe that can be replicated here if management see fit? Personally, I think it a great idea, from the help and advice I've received, I'd certainly like to thank those members. ( I mean that sincerely folks, Hughie Green anyone....? So,how about it Neil? Can we have such a section? Please?

I know, but you frequently don't give advice as a vendor |

![]() 1129 forum posts 1 photos | Also John Rudd, Brian Wood, Ian Parkin, Jason B among others, all of whom have all gone well out of their way away from the forum to be very helpful to a very inexperienced newcomer and have taken on small jobs that were beyond me, with me learning along the way. Many thanks to all of you! Regards, Martin |

842 forum posts 56 photos | Ketan; Coincidentally, I was reading yesterday an opinion piece in Canada's The Globe and Mail **LINK** Which starts off with the lines: There’s another book out about how dumb America is getting. In The Death of Expertise, Tom Nichols takes things a step further than other analysts of the decaying American mind. He goes so far as to say “ignorance has become hip.” This web forum generally has been helpful and interesting contributors give good thoughts and advice. Long may it be so. I missed what happened to Michael Gillian - I don't read all of the topics all of the time - but I hope that all of the contributors here are always in learning mode (ears open) -as there are a lot of interesting topics here. |

257 forum posts 14 photos | I think his 2nd and more recent 'I am not going to post anymore' is due to a PM exchange we had between us. I had asked via a forum post for specific information and support on a subject and immediately received from him a string of unsolicited links in response, which, while generic on the subject, were going to be first stops for anyone with any meagre ability with a search engine. Subsequently via a PM I commented to him that I thought that his local search engine service could put some people off and perhaps 'less might be more' and certainly less likely to undermine his standing and his in depth personal knowledge and experience. If I am the cause then clearly I must have touched the same nerve as others had earlier in the year. |

it's rare to have acquainted another member as polite and articulate as Michael G Michael W Don't know if I got the grammar right in my correcting your comment - apologies if I am wrong. Either way, totally agree with you. In the early days, Michael G and a few of the 'old guard' often corrected my bad (foul) language on this forum. I do still stumble on occasions, and 'must try harder'. I am hopeful that Michael will continue to contribute in his own way, if and when he wants to. Ketan. |
