I've just been using some araldite , the ordinary stuff, not the rapid c##p and I happened to read the blurb on the tube. It's called araldite PRECISION!

Probably because with Araldite Rapid you only have a limited time (2 or 3 minutes) in which to align the two items being joined whereas with Araldite Standard you have a much longer time (up to 90 minutes according to a quick glance at my tubes). Therefore, it is much easier to "precisely" and accurately set the two parts. Hence "precision".

It's like a lot of things with the English language - one word can have a number of different meanings, all dependent on the context. Is it any wonder that non-native English speakers have trouble with English. (And there is another example of a word with different meanings - native!)

I went to Kmart recently to print some photos off my digital camera at their self serve terminal. I chose the more expensive "instant" option over the one-hour and next-day options. Took the chit the terminal spat out to the counter to pay and pick up my "instant" prints. "Oh, they should be ready in 10 to 15 minutes," the assistant says. Huh? Instant?

Precision with Araldite shirley means that you can stick the bits together exactly where you want to, unless you mess it with precision i.e. the parts will be stuck in the wrong place relative to each other with no gap to get anything into the join to prise it apart

Maybe it could mean less cleaning off cos you won't get it all over the place like I normally do.

What's the largest object that you've seen repaired with araldite? REME guys repaired the cracked radiator fan  housing on my chieftain tank back in the early 1970's with araldite reinforced with steel rods.
