Connecting a DVD player to a monitor.

Hello all, here's a question for the electronics buffs. Can I connect a DVD player to a stand alone flat screen monitor so I can watch DVDs instead of using my laptops little screen? I don't have or want to buy a television.

I'm no electronics buff.. but i guess it depends on the outputs of the dvd player and the inputs of the monitor you have or intend to get.

Personally I bought a 46" flat TV some years ago and matched it's RGB input to my PC's RGB output (probably be HDMI now) so I can watch DVD's with the PC's player, watch internet streamed stuff and back in the day actually see the numbers on a many columned spreadsheet.

Terrestrial reception here is pants so we don't bother or have a licence and the legacy sat dish here isn't connected.

There's also a  good chance your laptop has appropriate outputs for a monitor

It all depends on the connectivity of the dvd player and the monitor. There's also the audio side to consider....does the monitor have inbuilt speakers?

If the dvd and the monitor have composite video and audio sockets then there's no reason why it shouldnt work...

If you dont already posses these items, then when buying, ask the seller the same question.....'Are these two items compatible to play a dvd? '

All modern DVD players will have an HDMI output. There are also very many monitors which have HDMI input(s), so all you need is a single HDMI cable between them and you're sorted for video as well as audio if the speakers are built into the monitor.

Should be possible but depends on what the DVD and Monitor support. There are many possibilities. Are you able to post pictures of the various sockets they have round the back?

Can you connect the laptop to the monitor, using the connector that is about 1/3 in high and 3/4 wide and has 3 rows of pins? If so you can divert the laptop screen onto the monitor with a special key combination which on mine is Fn + F3. Which connectors everything has is rather dependent on age.

Although you say you don't want to buy a TV it will solve you problem at a stroke, you do not need a licence to own a tv but you do if you receive live programmes on it. The connection will be just an HDMI cable and the will take care of everything. A monitor with sound will probably cost much the same as a TV. A new monitor will likely have a VGA port a DisplayPort or DVI or maybe HDMI. There are adaptors for HDMI to DVI but no sound. I think you need to choose a DVD player and shop for a monitor with suitable inputs to match your DVD player if the DVD player has audio outputs you can use a sound system for the audio. Also consider the size of a monitor, a widescreen will be more satisfactory for most DVD material. While I respect your position with the TV it will probably give you the most bangs for your buck and the simplest solution. My wife and I were TV free for about 5 years but persuading the license people we didn't use a TV was an annual event.

Also consider a blue ray player, these usually play DVD and audio discs and may future proof you if DVD is superseded by blue ray.

I assume you are referring to a DVD player that is normally connected to a TV and not a DVD unit from a PC or Mac. If you use a DVD player and both have a HDMI connector then there shouldn't be a problem ( I think).

A suggestion that counters everything written thus far......

Buy a tv with an inbuilt dvd player.....job done, no wires no fuss....just insert and play!

Cant get any easier than that.....

If you want to avoid TV licence issues there are plenty of HDMI monitors for relatively cheap prices. Modern DVD players should all have HDMI out.

Just don't get ripped off for a gold-plated lead.

So teh answer to your question is yes.
