So an Engineer I use in the area is retiring... >>

He gave me a box of Coventry heads and this tool was part of the collection. >>

When the head is pulled up it makes a 1/4 turn then locks but there is a little bit of play of 1/4 inch so not a precision tool.>>

There is a spline on the back of the shaft and a dovetail spline in the head with a locking screw. >>

I could go back to him and ask but then I would have to face the smug, lording it up which I suffer whenever I go and see him with a job which my modest machines cannot handle. >>

Any help will be appreciated.

I have finally figured out how to create an album on this site.... sorry for being slow. pictures below

It looks like a toolholder that plugs into a turret lathe turret. (guessing)

Looks like a self releasing tap holder. You may find that when it pulls out off the drive pegs it locks up on a roller clutch in one direction but runs free I'm the other direction.

To use set it so at the tapping depth it pulls off the drive pegs and spins free. Once you reverse the lathe the clutch bites and winds the tap out.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.

John, this would fit in with it being in a box of Coventry heads. Thanks for the tip, I shall go and see if this will fit any of my machines…. That rear shaft is 1 ½ inches which is not something my Chip Master can accommodate

The rear edge of the big end has taken a beating... loosening and extraction issues?

It's clearly keywayed on the exterior and interior to prevent twisting so i'm gonna guess it's a tap/die holder of sorts, could even be the sliding head of a die holder. The back shoulder has clearly taken a clobbering as Ady1 said, probably to take it out after it got stuck in it's holder.

I would like to refer Ady1 to Tony Pratts message! >>

Made me laugh which is nice as I’m normally bitter and twisted.>>

The more I look, I think John has it. Unfortunately it’s not going to fit anything I have. >>

My unusual tool with a battered big end it going to be looking for a new home.

It looks like a floating reamer holder for a capstan lathe but with dowel pins it obviously can't be, the key way stops whatever twisting, so at a guess perhaps it held a broach to produce a square or hexagon shape in a stationary component.

If you do want to use it, why not make an adaptor to carry it, with a suitable taper to fit the Tailstock mandrel?

Or even more radical, mount it in a 4 Jaw , clock it for the shank to run true, and then reduce the diameter to something that your lathe can accept?

Hi Howard,

I understand where you're coming from on that as I have a few projects that are waiting in the wings... Taper attachment from a jones and brown to fit onto my chipmaster, DRO's adding to my chipmaster and Beaver, a slotting attachment from a bridge port adding to the Beaver... I will add it to my box of things to do when I have 5 mins laugh

I always kick myself when I get rid of something and then months later finding that I need just something like it.
