LBSC Evening Star Boiler

There is an incorrect dimension regarding the depth of the boiler throatplate below the barrel. My boiler drawing and the book show the depth as 1" whereas the actual measured dimension is 1 1/4".

The side view drawing #1 shows this boiler drawn as 1" though.

I have almost completed the boiler, and have built it to the 1 1/4" dimension.

It appears to be the correct size.

Now, lets see if the copyright holders will amend their drawings!

About the same odds as Leicester City winning the cup I'd say.

This is a typical problem with many drawings of model engines.

Many model engineers, like myself, are not professional machinists and the drawings are also produced by non-professional or untrained drafters and are not checked for mistakes. If they were professionally produced drawings, they would cost thousands of dollars and would be too expensive for us to purchase.

This is why I re-draw everything before I commence machining. You get what you pay for !

It's complicated as the sellers are licencees not the copyright holders, and in this case I imagine the copyright holders are the estates of Martin Evans and LBSC.

The copyrights in the original layouts (as published in the magazines), expire 25 years after publication but the estates hold the author's copyright for 75 years after their death.

It's not easy or cheap or even practical to track down the copyright owner and get their permission to make changes. Would anyone expect book publishers to do the same every time someone found a typo in a book?

However, we do have TWO topics on here dedicated to sharing errors on drawings. This one probably should be flagged up in here as well:

I'm not aware of anywhere else that tries to share information on drawing errors/clarifications in this way.

Always good if you can find someone to independently verify the error, then make sure it is posted in this forum. A letter to ME to alert readers would be a good idea as well.

Hi Neil,

With a few notable exceptions for Reeves and not published in ME such as 'Lickham Hall', all LBSC's designs copyright were owned by ME. ME bought up the copyright to other LBSC designs for 'Speedy' and the 'Schools' when they bought out English Mechanics. So apart from the few Reeves own the copyright of, all are owned by ME.

I am quite sure all copyright in Martin Evans' loco designs for ME also vests in ME.

Don Young unusually (but cleverly) retained copyright in all his ME designs. This copyright is owned by Reeves having first been assigned to Hugh Mothersole, shortly before Don's death.

I think most of us miniature loco buffs were a bit surprised when the LBSC 3.5"g Heilan Lassie and Schools series were repeated in ME recently with no attempt to upgrade the boilers etc to modern spec. There was no legal reason why ME could not have done this as they own the copyright, not that amending the boiler drawings would have been a problem anyway even without the copyright, as the upgrades would have constituted new design.
