I either use black Mild steel which does not move about much or EN8 and take care to balance the cuts and let it rest. Or go for a built up crank. Basically its heat treated to remove any internal stress so won't move about when you start making unbalanced cuts in it. |

![]() 785 forum posts 152 photos | Hi Nick, A311 is an ASTM designation, the equivalent AISI code is as Peter mentioned AISI 1144. [ Stressproof ] I have used it a few times and it is tough, but nice to machine. Not quite as tough as AISI 4340 [EN 24 ] . With the correct insert it can leave a lovely surface finish. |
