I would love to know what it does. I see that a recoil escapement is used which is probably no surprise since quite a lot of "things" are powered. I looked at the web site but it appears to be a picture book.

Well yes, it's wonderful! But all that complication to drive a novelty digital display from a probably lacklustre escapement!

Its a clock that draws the time on a mechanical writing pad. When the pad is shaken the numbers are erased. (the video is in a loop and only shows the same movement over and over, only showing the same time)

"Why bother?" Because you can. It becomes a moving piece of art as well as a clock. Very clever.
