Has anybody out there built the Corliss Valve Engine?

Do you have a particular one in mind as you say "THE corliss Valve engine" ?

On the otherside of the pond the Lane and Bodley from Historic models and Reproductions is quite popular, the Throp design available from Southworth is more common this side though neither are built in large numbers. There is also the MEM Corliss that is quite a simple build that can all be done from barstock with freely available plans.

Our member Phil will hopefully chip in as he is part way through a model of Agnes.

Sorry, mine is the single cylinder Arnold Throp model from Southworth Engines.

I inherited this model 30% completed and would like to complete it, but there does not appear to be much info on internet that I can find.

For example, I am currently making the governor, but there is no info on fixing the counter weights, are they simply glued on?!

My drawings which are Superscale Ltd overwritten with Fleet Model Steam Services have a note under the weights

"Fix to item 245 on 1/8" BDMS dowels with Loctite"

So sounds like sticking them on will be fine

Phil is probably the best guy to talk to about the Throp Corliss, if he does not see this thread in the next day or so I'll let him know about it. He has a thread over on MEM forum about his build which may be of interest as there is some talk about Southworth, Jo and Ramon on the forum also have the castings and Ramon has done some work on his. A bit more searchingon that forum will throw up a few more threads of interest.

My attempt with a governor was on a Stuart Turner S9 rebuild/restoration, I annealed a pair of suitable sized ball bearings, drilled and tapped them(1/8"W I think), screwed the arms in and riveted the ends and polished them, then heat blued them. I think the original balls may have been castings, but they, among other things were missing.

Places like Graces  guide may have data and drawings from the original period for some of these old designs

(put the search term into their search box)
