While waiting on my mini lathe to arrive, I was wondering what CAD software people used for drawings - I just want to do some working drawings of the parts I intend to machine, and if you could recommend a free (or sub 30 quid) offering, and your experiences with it, that would be great. I'm good with computers, and used ProDesktop a bit in school 15 years ago or so.

(for windows is fine, but bonus points if it runs on linux too)

How easy is SolidWorks and AutoCad to pick up for 2d stuff?

Draftsight is free and good. Transition form Autocad was seamless, similarly Progecad. No experience of any others. Version of Draftsight for Linux available I think

You might want to go through some of the "back issues" for more info.

Librecad seems to have a number of linux users. Not sure if they have a windows or mac version. Sometimes those 2 are beta if available.

I prefer sketches myself so pass on usability

Draftsight works well on Linux. There are two versions, one for Ubuntu and one for Fedora. I use the Ubuntu version on Linux Mint.

Russell.
