Who on earth buys woodruff keys ? There are two clear sides to this comment and I see both quite clearly. If you are retired or at least a model engineer (or any sort of maker/doer) I can see the sense in someone wanting to make one. Even if it is just to experience this. On the other side of the coin, I just would not have the time or inclination, I would pull the box out marked "Woodruff Keys" and select one, modifying it if need be. Anyone trying to earn a crust just doesn't have the time. There is a third option - you are on a breakdown and you can either wait for the shops to open tomorrow or actually get paid for making one, that works for me too. I have done more than my share of all nighters. And a couple of All Weekenders too. graham. |

Anything comes in for repair with a woodruff keyway in goes out with a flat key fitted. Absolutely hate the bloody things. What engineer in his right mind came up with a flawed design that called for an extra deep keyway with sharp corners often going deeper than 1/2 the shaft diameter ??
Seen far, far to many shaft that have peeled open from the bottom of a woodruff keyway. |

Am I right in saying 404 is 1/8" thick, 1/2" wide and has a height just under 13/64"? |

2011 forum posts | At risk of boring everyone- Woodruff keys are not meant for driving loads, they are for location, eg. timing gear. Easiest way to make them is find a bolt of correct dia. and saw a slice off, then file to size. |
