Given that Eric's post was under "Drawing Errors and Corrections" ... one might reasonably assume that the "Helping dad vertical engine" is near perfect.

No I doubt it. crying

Errors always creep in some ware.

The best you can do is limit their impact.

Stew,

I did say 'near perfect'

... We must not ignore Eric's somewhat cryptic `

My apologies, I couldn't find a way of deleting the post , however I will repost it. I won't go into the ins and outs of why I needed to remove it.

On the bill of material Item 15 Connecting rod should read 1/4" x 1/2" x 4"

I'm busy making this engine at the moment and I believe I've spotted a small error on page 513 (April 2015).

I think the central portion of part 39 (the parallel shaft) should be 26mm long, which is the sum of the central portion of part 22 (14mm) and two copies of part 24 (6mm). This means the overall length of part 39 will be 46mm.

I'd also suggest making the studs (part 41) a bit longer, say 36mm, as the existing length only engages 3mm at each end. I made mine from 4mm threaded rod to save time.

Otherwise, looking forward to seeing it run

Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for your interest in the engine and for posting the drawing errors, I hope you enjoy the rest of the build.

Cheers

Bugger. Does that mean I've made them too short.

Hi Eric

I didn't realise until I did a trial assembly.

If it's any consolation I had to remake a part today because I got the first one upside down for part of the marking up. Doh!

Pleased you got a runner Bob, I hope you enjoyed the build, did you make the flywheel from perspex?.

I like to experiment with different ways of making things so I designed it with a fabricated fly wheel, have any of you guys made this fly wheel ?. I was a little unsure just how people would take to the design hence I gave them a chose of fly wheel design.

Cheers

I fabricated it from 5" Dia. pipe. With a paper template it was easy to hacksaw and drill.

Stewart, is the grass hopper ready for publication yet ?.

Hi Eric

I submitted the Grasshopper article over 12 months ago for some reason its not been published, and as it was written as a follow on from the other two engines, the passing of time has taken that link away so it will need a re-write so that it will now stand alone, I'm not sure if it will be worth my time doing this.

Any way I've sent you the drawings and a link to a drop box with the article in it.

Any problems just drop me an email.

Cheers

Stew

Hi Stewart..

Yes the flywheel is thick perspex as are the bearing housings, It was the only material in my junk box and I was concerned it would not be heavy enough but it runs ok and it was an education and a pleasure for me to make this model.

I think a heavier flywheel would be more appropriate ... one tip I can give is... bolt or clamp the engine base to a good solid bench, its probably my workmanship at fault, but when running it resembles a drunken Scotsman dancing over the crossed swords....! (not a derogatory remark to Scotsmen)... I am myself related to Scotland.

Thanks Stewart.

It runs! Just got to make a nice base, clean up and paint it.

The first attempt ended with a loud bang. Then I realised I'd connected to the unregulated side of the compressor and the short connecting pipe had migrated to the other side of the garage. Ho hum
