Hello Brian,

I just sent off my ML7R headstock and spindle to Darren Boden and had it back in 3 days with new angular contact bearings and a scraped in cone bearing - top class service. I went for posting the headstock as I'm over 3 hours away from Darren who's based in Nottingham. Everything you read about him is top class and my experience is likewise.

[email protected]

All the best,

Geoff

Thanks for the info Geoff..i will forward an e:mail to him..

I have for a while had an annoying knock on my Super 7, cannot make out exactly where its from.

so rather than mess with what i don't understand, get an expert to take a look, and possibly service the machine at the same time..

Darren and Pete serviced my ML7 beginning of October, nice job running really well. Weekend service only I think and date to service depends on Nottingham Forest home fixtures.

Hello Brian

Just a thought but the knock you describe might just be coming from the semi circular bull wheel swing-over lever for backgear working. Perhap worth checking before you go further.

Regards

Brian

Hello, thanks Brian, that's a very good point, it is literally tick, tick, tick,

I have had no reply from the email I sent to Darren, so maybe a job to do during the Xmas break.

Hello again Brian,

My 4 step gear cluster that the swing over lever engages into has perhaps 1 mm or so of end float on the spindle and that too has the potential to rattle in the bullwheel pocket made to receive it. I only really gave you half the story, but of the two the semi-circular catch will be the one that variations in cutting loads will have the greatest audible effect upon.

Regards

Brian

I agree with Brian. It's almost certainly the little backgear bull wheel locking lever. If you look at the end of it, you're likely to see evidence of the end of it contacting something and a corresponding silver metal mark in the head casting at the point of contact. Very easy to check by either engaging back gear or using a bit if tape to hold the lever further in place. If you're not too purist about it. You could file a little extra clearance on the end of the lever to stop the ticking.

Hello, really not sure.

Tried the screw driver against the ear tonight and seems to be coming from the clutch area..

could be the thrust bearing maybe, not a problem just an annoyance.

With all due care taken over safety etc, a long screwdriver with the handle up against your ear and the pointy end on various suspect bits of the lathe should help pin it down to a specific area or even bearing.

Safer - if costlier - alternative is a 'mechanic's stethoscope' .. ebay probably the cheapest source.

Does it go away if you engage the backgears? Is it related to spindle speed or motor speed? Both are easy to check.

Thanks chaps for taking the time to reply, sorry for the delayed response.

I have confused myself with this, not sure now if it's a knock, a rattle or what, so have taken the decisive decision to turn the radio up..until I have time to investigate it properly,

providing it doesn't get worse , I think I will live with it.
