Test ran it today. smiley

I still have quite a bit of cosmetic finishing work to do but I wanted to see the rascal turning over.

On this run there are no piston rings fitted, gaskets or any gland packing so it's leaking air out of everywhere. The valve timing is also only approximate and just in the ball park to get it running.

Finished it.! smiley - Well almost as I will be adding a few extras as listed in the video.

I cladded the cylinder with some strip wood that I already had. Not sure what it is but it's some kind of hardwood.

I attached them with super glue and after each strip was added I squidged in a tad of silicone. All was then sealed with a good few coats of satin lacquer.

And here it is. smiley

.
Thanks to all those who have assisted me on this project.

Good to see it running slowly, on a whiff of air.

Well done, Nick.

I thought you may have put some insulation under the cleading as you intend this to be a working enginequestion

Certainly runs nicely, have you tried adding a bit of load - finger on the flywheel is an easy way to do it and the note from teh exhaust should change. May also be worth thinking about a couple of drain cocks to get rid of any condensate as you are going to be running on steam, think about a small oil cup on the eccentric too. You could also allow for an eccentric to drive a boiler feed pump or just fit a hand pump into teh plant and remember to use it

As your intended load is quite constant I doubt a governor will be needed.

Whats next a boiler?

Nice work Nick, beautifully smooth running on very low pressure even when still running in and impressively well balanced at high speed. You must be well pleased, boiler next perhaps!?

Martin.

Thanks for the kind replies guy's smiley

Jason. Yes all points noted and I have loaded it up with my finger. As for the additions of the drain cocks and water pump they are also a strong possibility. I just forgot to mention them. I don't know the thermal properties of silicone but I would imagine that will act as some kind of insulator reasonably well in addition to providing support for the planking.

Cheers, Nick
