I'm not sure about the magnet from a magnotron - they're so powerful, you might not be able to shift it afterwards  !

magnetron magnets aren't that powerful, I got a pair of neodym ( I think thats how its spelt) magnets from a hard drive, only 30mm x 10mm x 2mm thick, I practically need a block and tackle to separate them.

I suspect your magnets are based on neodymium.

They certainly are! I've played with a few after taking hard drives apart. I might be paranoid about giving away private data, but before I scrap a hard disk I dismantle it, remove the disks, hacksaw them into quarters and then knock hell out of the quarters with a hammer. Nobody is going to recover data from them after that.

Andrew

Hi Andrew, I saw on the tele the other night, someone is making jewellery out of bits of hard drives, and other electronic componets. Perhaps tou could sell them some hammer finished earings or something.

Regards Nick.

I got three disks from my drive and they are next to me now, just sitting there , defying me to find a use for them.

Hi Wheeltapper,

The discs from hard drives are ground to a very fine tolerance...how much did you pay for thin parallels?

The thing to watch with those magnets is not to get yer' fingers in between them if you let one go.

How do I know?

And, made some badges for gallery staff, but they didn't like pushing clips through expensive dress material, so I fitted them with magnets.  Problem was that if the badges came anywhere near credit cards it was curtains, and if the magnet was released more than a few thou. from the other, it smashed the badge.

If you need to make the magnet weaker but a washer or plate on it. the magnetism comes through but not as strongly.

Only problem I've had with them is they're brittle ( as my sons 5 & 9 have proved ) so they don't bounce!

In Chris's "giving thread" I put how I use one with a handle in a plastic container to remove swarf etc.

Axminster list rare earth magnets but these are damn powerful !

Wolfie

at a push you can use a block of wood with a hole cut to a "close fit" on the lower stem and then  put a wood dowel / stick in theside of the block and get it where you want it.. eg grip in the tool post holder and spin the chuck carefully by hand having put the foot in contact with the workpiece.

The only important thing IMHO is that the thing does not move whilst you turn the chuck as it's a comparison device not an absolute measuring device. You compare readings to centralise.

Complicated to describe but easy to make!

Just spotted this thread.

Wolfie's alucky man, my raher fine vintage dial guage doesnt even have a big tab on the back for fixing! I have an ally block with hole in and a thumbscrew lock permanently fitted around the metal shaft the pointer comes out of.

Hi Nick,

Good idea! I have seen earrings made from CDs, may be I should start selling ones made from disk drive platters.

Regards,

Andrew
