Going off topic, but one issue with the registration route like NEC-EIC is that only ONE employee needs to go through the registration process. They can then, if they wish, delegate the authorty to do the work to others. They do of course remain responsible but it seems some don't realise this or just don't care as long as they make money. Robert G8RPI. If you can provide evidence of non compliant with regulations work carried out by any NICEIC member in the interest of safety you as a professional engineer should report it to the relevant body. Emgee If I did I would. As you say I have a professional obligation. Everyone has a a moral obligation to do so. |

Edited By noel shelley on 11/01/2023 10:36:17 Noel NICEIC members are subject to annual inspection which comprises the inspector checking invoiced works and deciding which he wants to inspect to confirm good practise and compliance with regulations. When I asked if spot checks were done on members work I was told NO ! Noel. ... Ever tried to sue an incompetent solicitor? Most trade bodies exist to protect their members. They rarely discipline members unless many complaints are received, which - tip coming - should be very clearly identified as COMPLAINTS in the title or whatever. Governments regulators require complaints to be counted and reported, but only if the complainer explicitly says it's complaint. Many commercial firms do the same. A 20 page rant doesn't count unless the word complaint is used, and even then there's a chance it's only added to the statistics! Action is only taken if enough complaints are received. Individuals are rarely considered important. Reporting crime to the police is the same; don't expect the Flying Squad if someone keys your car! Home Office figures show most crimes aren't investigated. Instead the police simply issue a crime number allowing an insurance claim can be made. Spot checks would make a world of difference, but the regulators are underfunded and trade bodies disinclined. For example, although the Information Commissioner requires firms to protect computer stored personal data, they don't set standards, or check what, if anything, has actually been done. They impose big fines after a major incident exposes security failures, but that does customers no good at all. CORGI and similar pick up the bill if a member causes a major incident, but they don't chase small offences. Is the arrangement hopeless? Whilst self-regulation is clearly flawed, my feeling is it works better than paying hoards of inspectors to check everything. In practice, most jobs are done safely and effectively, and it's not worth bogging the whole economy down just to keep a minority happy. Every so often it turns out the system has failed on a large scale. Then there's a scandal, normally dealt with by slowly organising an enquiry, that eventually makes recommendations, that are ignored 5 years later because Joe Public can be relied on to have forgotten all about it. Steve, I'm not sure sarcasm is the most effective way of avoiding argument.
There's no issue about discussing 3 phase on the forum. My own article:: But obviously, people should only work with mains voltages if they are competent to do so. One area that will always be one of contention is proper shielding for RFI - not helped by some manufacturer's guidance being completely contradictory to that of other manufacturers. Neil Hello Neil. I wonder if you could take this thread down or lock it. I can now see that it is pretty futile to post this sort of thing on the Model Egineers site. Thank you. Steve. |

3293 forum posts 112 photos | Steve - It's not your subject that was wrong; but one or two of your asides right at the start might have hurt a few users' feelings needlessly . A more diplomatic approach may well have paid dividends, if not in offers of physical equipment, then in constructive suggestions about your planned video's contents. ' Mind you, we did wander a bit. CORGI is now called "Gas Safe" but anyway, registers gas-fitters, not electricians! |

1025 forum posts 204 photos | A local company used to sell electric motors and set up the VFD for that particular motor and application. Just so happened that they had a little box and Motor that suited the Myfords as a change out set up. Install motor to the lathe. Place the VFD inside a suitable box, mount the remote connections where you want them, and plug it in, it all worked. I got my Brother to help with the box in my case, and set up the limit switch for me at the same time. It's been the best upgrade ever for my machine. Now the motor company no longer does the set up for people, and technically they have to get an electrician in to wire it all and check it all out etc. I am not surprised by this though. Some people, can not be trusted to do things correctly at all. They just have it in them that this is good enough and maybe they have been lucky and gotten away with so many dodgy things. It would be very nice if there was a very well sort out and a more simple way of sorting out VFD drives for sure so that were a plug and play device, like a transformer is. |
