There is a similar machine in a dealer's ad on the back page of the latest ME magazine - £950+ VAT so you are on the money if you are buying from a dealer, but possibly a bit dear for a private sale, depending upon what accessories you are getting.

Doug, could you give me some exampels of things you've made or things you've struggled with on the Speed 10?

Nick, Yes... unfortunately this is what I'm thinking, for example theres a Super 7 on ebay now (2 from the same chap) for 1150ono, granted, no tooling, no goodies, just a machine, but if I compare what a super 7 will do, with a speed 10... it's a big difference. If it was £600, I'd have just done it and not thought twice, but for 1250, theres quite a few options and nice as it is, I want to use it, the fact its a museum piece 9in terms of its finish) isn't a + point as it won't stay that way.

Be wary of the £1150 Super 7s on Ebay - they are capstan machines, so no tailstocks or saddles & not really a fair comparison.

myfordboy on YouTube seems to do a lot of work on an ML10.

Yeah they've been up a while which is never a good sign.

Decided against the Speed10 in the end, couldn't shake the feeling the diameter would come back n bite me in the backside. Cheers fellas for the help

I ran a Speed 10 from 2000 to 2015. At the time I found it adequate although the fact that it just can't swing a 7" Stuart Models flywheel irritated me on several occasions. I used a double-swivel vertical slide that I still have, and found I could do satisfactory milling on small, short cuts.

The crossslide is narrow, and that limits rigidity both in turning and milling. The spindle bore is too narrow for lots of purposes.

In 2015 I bought a Warco WM250V, a good deal bigger machine, and adapted the milling slide to fit - and I'm happy with that. It's your choice, but I'd save your money a bit longer and get something bigger and better than a Speed 10.

Hi Liam - sorry for the delay in replying, just noticed your posting. I see you have decided against the Speed 10 so not really relevant now but I have made a lot of small tooling and projects. The most frustrating thing has always been the small bore through the headstock (about 5/8" if I remember ) .I am not into making models so things like large flywheels have never been an issue for me but may well be for others. Probably the largest thing I have made with the Speed 10 is a Quorn cutter grinder.

Check the bed for wear , once an ML 10 bed is worn it is scrap , no bed refinish is possible.. Whereas the 7 bed can be re ground (at great cost )

Certainly Beeston Myford said that you cannot regrind the bed of an ML10 However it can be done and I have seen one example to prove it. It does take more time to adjust other bits and pieces, but quite do able.

Andrew.
