Is it worth mentioning that huge numbers of users now use tablets rather than laptops? smiley

My main use for a computer is to access the internet for shopping, news that is unbiased or at least biased the way I like it and various social media sites. An iPad does this very well for me. I also have a PC desktop AIO which is mainly used by my wife as her finger doesn’t seem to work touchscreen devices. Printing and NAS storage are all wireless.

The problem that I have is that on occasion, the hard disk light comes on and remains on and steady, meanwhile the computer appears to have locked up. Eventually, the light starts flickering and slowly the computer starts responding again. The first few times this happened was when I was using Google Street View which made me suspect that Street View was causing Firefox to fail to release memory. Using System Monitor showed that when this problem occurred, the CPU history was 100% whilst the Memory & Swap History was usually quite high.

Bit of (Mozilla) discussion on Firefox cache use here FWIW

SOD/Dave, & Bandersnatch

Tried that. And deliberately tried to make the machine stall whilst watching the display. It seems that trouble starts when load average startes to approach 1.8 or so. In addition, I noticed that the Swap memory did increase although not to use all available memory.

However, just as the report that Bandersnatch refers, although the Swap did decrease when the machine was idle, it never went back to zero. I'm sorry, I forgot to see what was being used even though the machine was idle. So maybe there is something about Firefox not releasing memory properly.

Anyway, FWIW, I mentioned that I also have a Toshiba L200 working as my backup machine which is only used once a week. This machine has, if I've got it right, a 2 x Pentium Dual CPU T2380 @ 1.8Ghz in it, which I understand makes it a rather better machine than the A200. Otherwise it is more or less the same with 2Gb RAM and a similar sized internal hard disk. Both machines have external hard disks for full backup and data storage so what I'm thinking is to swop the two machines over and then see what happens. I am aware that RAM is still on the short side, but maybe the increased CPU capability might help to counteract it.
