Put the vice on a bench and use it to hold the milling machinecheeky.

wink. There are occasions when too much of a good thing is NOT wonderful.

Richard.

It's a thought. I don't have exact dimensions with me at the moment

The nut, thrust retainer, handle and screw are all missing (had to be removed before someone could dismantle it to put in the skip).

The nut & thrust retainer will be about 1.5" diameter by 2" long, the thread was probably 1-1.25 " diameter x 16" long with 4" in the thrust retainer and square for the handle. The Vice is Imperial in its threads.

My plan is, at the moment, to use a 500mm section of M20 studding I have that fell off a truck at the local roundabout (one of 20 and they ripped open several tyres before we cleared them up, I kept the undamaged ones & recycled the others), machine the end for the thrust retainer & handle. Machine some 50mm bar and thread the inside M20 x 2.5. The handle I'll make up from plate and a turned hand grip. The M20 thread looks a bit skinny(!), but it'll be more than strong enough for any use I could possibly put the vice to.

As for doing a 'Proper Job', with an LH ACME leadscrew etc. I looked at Ondrives & E-Bay, and they weren't wildly different in price for a 24-25mm dia leadscrew & nut (£66 & £25 respectively). That ends up making the vice a bit pricy for something that came from a skip and is probably too big for me to use anyway.

Regards,

Richard.

Overall length 11.75"

Thread 7/8"DIA x 1/8 pitch RH

4 3/4" of thread travel

1" boss on nut

5/8" square for handle

2.45" circlip groove to shoulder

Shoulder 1.25"DIA

Nut 1.44" long

Sounds like it may be a bit small for your vice Richard but if anyone needs one of these it is unused.

Thanks Mike, but it is a bit small. Which shows how truly enormous the wretched thing is! With a handle the vice will be about 30" long. The travel is at least. 8", probably more. Thanks for the thought, though.

Regards,

Richard.

Richard, if you can't find a use for the vice, and no one else wants it, it will be a source of cast iron for years to come.

Have to confess I'd rather it were used for the job it was designed for. Maybe I need to get a milling machine on a suitable scale. Given the power supply to our single street village, I suspect a suitable machine would dim everyone's lights a lot when turning the motor on.

Regards,

Richard.

Once on My skip diving expeditions I found a really old Doctors exam table. Complete with stirrupssurprise. It had really old iron trimmings. It kept the Wife out of the garage till it was sold. Made $100 for just loading it up and writing a free ad. You should have seen all the horn beeping and fist pumping bringing it home during rush hour traffic. Loved every minute of it.
