i would go on all that has been listed so far, starting with the 4 jaw independent chuck, the DTI and the 0-1" (or 0-25mm) micrometer - they are a 'must'.  The 4 jaw is my chuck of choice every time.

If you have the space and money, a tool high on my list is the metal cutting bandsaw. I have a small one that fits under the bench but can still cut as per the usual 6x4's. Unless you really like hacksawing and are very good at it, meaning quick and able to cut straight every time, no wandering off line, the bandsaw is worth it''s weight in gold - certainly has been in my shed! Be lost without it now!

Chris

A tailstock chuck, a 4-jaw, a DTI and a micrometer

3 of the 4 can be had for about a tenner from a well known site to get you going

My wife would like me to pose the question "when do you stop buying" lol
As previous posters have mentioned- buy it when you need it. Otherwise you'll end up like me with shelves full of stuff you may never use.

Even the 250KG steel safe left in the garage at move-in time now has a use, both as a welding table and for fitting a tough work vice for bending/hammering stuff

If you want to work to thous, don't rely on digi calipers, buy a micrometer

Or just get some decent digital calipers wink 2.

Don't disagree; I have a Mitutoyo 0-25mm mic, Mitutoyo 0- 200mm digi Caliper along with metric / imp. mics. 'acquired' / bought over the years which I use for final readings. My 'general readings' digi callipers are what I would call decent... bought from DRO... 3" & 4" ... & both maintain consistent readings... usual disc 'r... thumbs up
