Copper melting point 1085C Tin 232C. Won't have much tin left! Posted by Neil Wyatt on 22/02/2018 21:03:03:
Might be easier to dissolve copper in molten tin. Not sure you want to go adding raw phosphorus though... Neil Edited By Neil Wyatt on 22/02/2018 21:03:58

I make my own solder. First I melt the required quantity of lead and the add the required quantity of tin, then cast it into sticks. Forget the brass as this contains zinc. Get hold of some pewter tankards (90% Tin), melt your copper then add the tin. |

I have just found a 1919 copy of The Model Engineer and Electrician. When did it change it's name? |

I would make a stepped mandrel to fit the the hole and the recess. Clamp the mandrel in the tailstock chuck and use this to hold your inplace whilst you set the four jaws to the job. Hope this makes sense.

Part it down to the maximum you can then bore the centre out . |
Thread: Unusual reamer |
14/02/2018 22:21:31 |
An old toolmaker trick with a fixed reamer to make it cut over size is to put a piece of shim on one side.

It's a kingpin reamer. I have a full set of them. MOWOG is the trademark name for Morris Wolseley Group |

I will have a look at mine tomorrow. Have you tried unscrewing the the thimble? I think there is an adjustable ring under the thimble.

Thread: BSB vs Cycle Threads |
11/02/2018 11:07:58 |
I Know how you feel! I rebuilt a French Amilcar engine for customer. The engine had been in the UK since before the war and had been worked on numerous times by bodgers. The threads are supposed to be French metric and I had BSF, Whit, UNC, UNF and ISO Metric! Some I could helicoil but most I had to fit threaded bushes. Posted by colin wilkinson on 11/02/2018 08:11:24:
Sorry if I am missing something, my model engineering experience is zero, but as a motorcycle bodger of many years using Cycle thread 1/4 BSF has 26tpi not BSW. Common to find BSF fitted as replacements as normal suppliers don't carry BSC. Some bikes like the BSA Bantam have a mix of BSW, BSF, BA, UNF, and BSC originally as it was produced over many years. My pet hate is restoring a bike to find metric fasteners and even worse, threads re-tapped metric. Colin

It could be either a primer powder for firearms or ceramic material.

I the 1980's we used to use Redstar Parcel services and we had a supplier in Birmingham. If we ordered before 9 we would get it in Sussex by 5 the same day!

Thread: Accurate measurement |
07/02/2018 22:14:12 |
Temperature has a big effect on measurement. I once made a large bronze bush to fit into a customers ali casting. It had to be a sliding fit. I sent it of to the customer who phoned me up to say it wouldn't fit. Visited customer whose workshop was about -5 degrees colder than the outside, I point this out to him and warmed the casting up to hand hot and the bush fell in! Metal moves a lot due to temperature. Removing zinc plating is really easy. You need to make a saturated solution of white vinegar and table salt. Then drop your nuts and bolts into the solution overnight, then they come out nice and clean! |
Thread: Joining cast iron |

I would use this method but in reverse with countersunk HT capscrews. You could also try to soft solder the joints as well. Posted by JasonB on 04/02/2018 20:23:13:
Thread the bottom plate and use counter bored holes in the top plate to take cap head screws placed in rows between the slots

A lot of these went to India in the 1980's when CNC came into the trade. They use them for making bolts. |

You can convert domestic fridges to 12 volt. You need to chnage the compressor to a 12 volt one. |

They could have used silver and the hydrogen peroxide to produce the steam.

The Me 163 was powered by Hydrazine, Methanol and water so why did they need to generate steam?
Posted by Carl Wilson 4 on 27/01/2018 00:36:35:
Just as an aside that steam generator is an almost verbatim American copy of the Walter one in the Me 163 Komet rocket aircraft.

Oneshot drain cleaner is 90% pure sulphuric acid and you can buy this from most from plumbers supplier. |
