Thanks J, I'll order that book.
I adored the 3 engines outside but there was a fair sized mob waiting to chat so I moved on.
Is there not a show at Alexanda Palace in January ?
Thanks for all your help (nice wheels too)

Thread: Copper Boiler, should I make my own or buy one ? |

Thanks Dave.
It wasn't my intention to open the can !!
What you say makes sense and is what I thought.
When you say insurance are there policies for model engineers ?

May I ask something related to boilers pls.
What are the rules regarding boilers ?
Do you only have to have them tested to show them in a public place ?

Jason
I have a Warco VMC mill & a Myford Super 7 lathe.
I may change to one of the bigger Warco lathes or a Harrison M300.

Hi All
This probably belongs in the beginners section so please move it if you want to (mods).
Anyway I am leaning towards making a Traction engine, pehaps a Burrell or similar 2" but I have seen a similar 3" (Is this going to be too much for a beginner?).
My real question is what form to buy it in.
From what I can work out I can by pretty much buy the finished article that I only have to add coal to right down to buying plans and a couple of cast bits.
I don't want to buy the former is the whole idea seems to me to actually build it yourself (not cheat). So how do you guys generally approach your build ?

Thread: HBC Components |

I have broken a couple of teeth off two of the nylon gears that drive my clarke milling machine. I have had them on order for some eight weeks now to no avail.
So I was chatting to a fellow at the 3D printing stall at the show and he said that there was a company in the surrey area that would almost certainly have them in stock.
He and another bystander said they were called HBC.
No amount of searching the internet has been fruitful. Can anyone give me a steer please.

Take into consideration that some people spend upwards of 10 years building their loco...I set myself a target of 12 months, and thats including making the boiler, so I can live with a compramise on quality. None of us live forever! None of us live forever. I don't want to sound more depressed than I am but that did occur to me.
I'm 57 and when I looked at a couple of the locos I did think "I'll not live long enough to finish one of those" |

Thanks Guys.
Now I'm home things are coming back into perspective a bit.

So I have visited two shows now and came away with a huge feeling of respect for the entrants in the competitions but along with this came a feeling of inadequacy.
Will this ever go ?

Fitted the DRO's and mucked about all day setting up and tightening things.
Then I made loads of swarf !!
What a lovely piece of kit.
Despite the couple of problems overall I am so pleased.

Just a quick question.
I'm planning to go down to the show tomorrow but will be leaving very early to get over the bridge at Darford before rush hour.
That is going to put me at the show for about 8am, does anyone know if there is a local spot to get breakfast or a cup of coffee ?

I got a message that someone had posted that they were having trouble seeing the pics.
I wonder what happened to that post ?
I have now worked out how to rotate them, sorry but here are the correct ones.

Glad for your sake its all safely installed. I had a far happier experieince with my Warco lathe - I think a lot depends on the driver. And the access. Mine came well equipped and placed the pallet where I wanted it. I did have a wait for the lathe but Warco were accurate to the week when it became available. SteveW Oh yes the driver was great, but then again he didn't work for Warco. ! |

The only problem I spotted was the longditutonal power-feed was not included.
Seems Warco didn't bother to tell me but apparently I should get it next week.
Nice of them to tell me the happy news. Grrr

The cavalry arrives !!
Here it is, a work in progress and a bonus extra shot.
|

This is how it came on the pallet.
The outer skin removed the contents.
We unpacked things and lifted it off the pallet.
With the aid of a couple of scaff tubes and some loading straps.
It was at this point one of the boys pulled his back and it was game over.
