Thread: Is an internet connection essential to run Ardunio programs |
23/02/2021 15:59:44 |
Dave - I have sent you a PM |
22/02/2021 20:17:47 |
Hi - I may be seriously off-topic with this one and if I am then my apologies but I have more faith in getting a quick and sensible answer from the users of this forum than perhaps from some of the other more relevant groups. My query is this. For a number of years I have maintained two PCs, one for indoor use connected to the internet running W10 and a much older unit for the the workshop running under XP. Is it possible to develop Ardunio programs (or should I say sketches) on the W10 machine with access to the the internet and then sinply copy the 'compiled' or working sketch over to the XP machine with no internet access to run under workshop conditions. This is the system I have run for other workshop applications and I would like to be able to do the same for the Ardunio system. |

Apologies for the delay but thanks for all your replies.. I will give it another try but somehow doubt if my results will ever rival those obtained by Clicksprings. |

Thread: Problems using Clickspring's technique for Blueing steel |
16/02/2021 20:21:35 |
Has anyone had success in blueing steel as portrayed in Clicksprings elegant Youtube video? I have tried with a couple of short lengths of 3/16" dia BMS, nicely burnished in the lathe and heated up in in a heap of brass shavings with ( I must admit) brass filings gathered up from under the lathe but the results have been nothing like that shown by Clickspring. Heating has been using a fair sized Sievert burner but results have been dismal. Where am I going wrong? |

Thread: Drawing for a SM-51224 Collet chuck |
03/02/2021 15:38:01 |
Yes, that is the style. I currently have 1/8" and 1/4" collets and am looking for a specification/drawing giving bsasic dimensions to make up some further sizes. |
03/02/2021 14:39:40 |
Can anyone help me with a link to a drawing for the SM-51224 air die grinder type collet chucks. |
Thread: Appreciating the works of C Hamilton Ellis |
01/02/2021 09:35:46 |
During the lock down I have taken to re-reading the books written by C. Hamilton Ellis and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Given that his style would now be considered somewhat dated and representative of a bygone privileged background I just wonder how many others on the forum might share the same opinion. An example of a very good read is his book on the London Midland & Scottish railway, packed full of detail and historical account and written with a great sense of humour |
Thread: Best way to straighten a Long Series drill |

Hi pgk - Tried to open your link but am getting "Secure connection failed". Could you have another look at for me. - thankyou |

As a result of a sudden shift in the clamping arrangements on my topslide I have succeeded in putting a set in a 3/8"Dia x180mm long series drill. Before I resort to some heavy thumping can any suggest a good/the right way to straighten things up? |
Thread: Silverline long reach air tool for Top/Crosslide mounting |
20/01/2021 12:31:07 |
Typical use would be light spotting/drilling/grinding applications |
20/01/2021 12:10:34 |
Hi - I am thinking about buying a Silverline 1/4" straight extended long reach die angle grinder/cut-off tool for mounting onto the Top/Crosslide of a Myford 7 lathe. Before paying a visit to that well known auction site for the purhase has anyone had the experience of using the tool this application? The long reach of the tool would appear to make it quite suitable for achieving a secure fixing. |

Thread: Bowman 'O' Gauge Model Steam locomotive |
15/01/2021 16:31:01 |
Hi - Thanks for the link. My model would have been the LNER 0-4-0 green LNER Saddle Tank as illustrated. My memory is failing faster than I thought, somehow imagining that it had more than 4 four wheels but there you go!. Budgets were must tighter in those days and Bassett Lowke would have been on the distant horizon. |

Hi all - Many years ago back in the '50s I was given a meths fired Bowman 'O' gauge model steam locomotive and ran it on a length of garden track set up by my father. I cannot remember very much about the details except that it was a tank engine, most probally an 0-6-0 (but possibly an 0-6-2?), LNER markings with outside cylinders I think and green in colour and showing the usual paint scars of a spirit fired locomotive of its time. How I wish I had kept hold of it but like most things of ones past it went the way of all things but I often think back to what I had once had. Are there any one time proud owners of a Bowman on the forum and can anyone possibly help identify the model I might have had and with post some likely photos? |
Thread: Insert tool cutting angles |

I am considering buying a VCGT carbide insert straight turning and facing tool in order to get into some tight corners. Can anyone help me with the size of the pointed angle of this tool? |
Thread: Between Centres Boring Bars |
31/12/2020 16:06:33 |
Hi everyonel - Thanks for all the useful help provided. Had not thought of using a boring head in a between-centres application but can see how it could work. EGA, Yes I am pretty sure that the larger bar is a Geo Thomas design. Think my next step will now be to make up a Hemmingway type fine feed adjuster. |
31/12/2020 10:05:12 |
Hi - I have in my collection of tools a couple of between centres boring bars, one of 7/8" dia fitted with a 1/4" cutter the other 5/8" dia with a 3/16" cutter, the difference being that the larger bar with the tool set at an angle is fitted with a fine thread adjustment. In the case of the smaller bar the lack of such a feature is a distinct disadvantage and I have often wondered how things could be improved. One obvious thought is to tap out 2BA for a short length behind the tool but at a 90deg angle and a 5/8" dia bar there is not too much meat to play with. Are there perhaps other ways to include some sort of fine feed arrangement to take the hit and miss out of the equation. All suggestions would be most welcomed. |
