Best way to straighten a Long Series drill

As a result of a sudden shift in the clamping arrangements on my topslide I have succeeded in putting a set in a 3/8"Dia x180mm long series drill. Before I resort to some heavy thumping can any suggest a good/the right way to straighten things up?

I would be interested in the answer, I have a slightly bent long series drill. I have tried several ways to straighten it and failed. At the moment it is awaiting conversion to a normal jobber length!

I suspect it is hardly worth the effort depending on the cost of a replacement.

Back in my archery days i owned one of this style arrow straightener
The method should be obvious with both bearing blocks moveable and the central DTI lever used to straighten.
I'd guess one could knock up a simple practical version with two bits of scrap drilled to 3/8 on the mill table to find the high spot and then use a blunt rod in the quill to press it back to true...?

Any flat surface will do and some little offcuts of 3mm hardboard as shims. Just find the high spot and press the drill down using one layer of shim at each end. Of course, it depends where the bend is located. If it is near the plain shank, you could hold the shank in the lathe and use the toolpost to push the bend using a soft pusher like a piece of wood. Great patience is needed and you will have to go just past the straight and come back to settle the metal down. If you can use the lathe, make a note of how far you moved the drill and also the ammount of bend still left in and you can reach the yield point without going too far past.

If I was using a long series drill, I would use shorter drills first to get the hole as deep as possible before finishing with the long one.

Put it on a press and keep on till it is straight using a pair of V Blocks. Noel
