Hi Jim

Ive fitted a gas spring and DROs to my X2. I bought the gas spring from LMS. The service was good, but don't forget the import duty as well as the posting. Add @ £15 to the bill. There are some photos in my albums. Strangely I've been altering the x axis DRO this evening as I've had problems getting to the x axis locking screw. Next project is to fit a home made power feed to the x axis.

Thanks Norman

I ran it up with my two nephews this morning, both were keen to see it run again...... and again. My grandson is a bit young yet, but it's on the shelf for him.

Thread: SIEG SC4 lathe – opinions please

Geoff

I'm not in a position to compare the noise level with other machines. I guess it is noisier at higher speeds, but I would not consider it too noisy. I agree with the previous comments that the noise can be reduced by setting and lubrication. I have found the power feeds very good, and as a virgin screw cutter got on well with setting the change gears and reverse control.

hope you find this helpful.

Hi Geoff

I bought myself a SC4 a couple of years ago. I hand' owned a lathe for a number of years, and that was an old Myford ML4. I wanted a machine that would run pretty much straight out of the box. I had read stories about how it would need to be stripped down and rebuilt to the move casting sand etc but these proved false. I have made a few tweaks to it but nothing outside the scope of a newbie, which I still class myself as. I had an electronics problem a few weeks in with it, which Axminster sorted really quickly for me, and have had no other problems since. I have been really pleased with it, pleased enough to by a SX2 mill form Ketan. Ditto comments with regard to service and quality from Arc as well as Axminster. Speed control is really good with plenty of torque. I would buy another if that is a recommendation? Completed a few projects and some tooling with it now and the accuracy seems fine. Hope this helps, happy to answer any specific queries.

Thread: Boiler Burners Part 1
04/10/2013 08:29:03

Hi Chris

I'm building a Tubal Cain Polly at the the moment for my grandson. Both of Tubal's books have details of spirit burner construction in them. I bought some wick from EBAY and the read the part about it only being suitable for paraffin burners and NOT being suitable for spirit burners. I don't know what the difference is, perhaps look on "Wick a Pedia" sorry! I plan to use three 4mm wicks in mine that are advertised for spirit burners. Watch out for the B&Q stock.

Thread: silver soldering problem

Hi Keith

thanks for the link to the website, it's been helpful reading through the info. I'll try the washing up liquid next time I mix up a flux paste. A couple of questions you may be able to answer for me:

Intend to discard unused flux paste when I've finished. To be honest I never mix up too much, so don't end up throwing away a lot. Am I right in thinking that this can be revived at a later date with a bit of water? If yes, how long will it remain re-useable, hours, days, weeks?

your web site says "Do not use conventional firebricks eg from storage heaters". I'm using some log burner hearth bricks for my hearth. Are these suitable or will they retain Instead of reflect heat?

Thanks for your input . As a newbie I'm finding this really interesting, and have over the past few months overcome some of the issues Baldric is experiencing

Hi Richard

I've had a look at your photos. It's brought back fond but hazy memories of trips to the Beer Engine a few years ago. I recall we renamed the Sleeper Heavy "Numb face" in light of the affect it use to have on us. Perhaps another thing to add to the to do list.

Thread: Magnetic tool storage
10/09/2013 13:39:19

I've been having a bit of a sort out and shift around in the workshop after completing a couple of projects. I've swapped the the positions of my lathe and mill as I think the storage space between the two will work better. I'm also looking to improve the storage of the assortment of various scanners, Allen keys etc that perhaps tend to end up balanced on various parts of the machines. Has anybody used these silverline magnetic tool holders?

I'm thinking about fitting them to some cabinet doors I have next to my machines. Easy to grab!

Neil thanks for the comments. I agree it looks a bit "out of scale". I think will have a look for an alternative and have toyed with the idea of an electronic ignition as I'm currently using a 12v coil and micro switch as a contact breaker.

Well it's taken a few months but I've finally finished it. I'm off to the BSMEE show tomorrow to hopefully get some inspiration for my next project.

Thread: Another thread on buying a lathe
14/08/2013 20:59:04

Welcome big H

inhave a couple of SIEG machines, the lathe being an SC4, bought from Axminster tools. Minus the the car mechanic bit, perhaps a similar background. I'm really pleased with both my machines. As per other threads, it appears over time that the quality of these machines have improved greatly. I've had mine for @ two years so no experience of the quality of older machines. Perhaps watch out if you buy an older one.

Thread: Ignition circuit problem ???
01/07/2013 21:42:28

Thanks Jason

The v3 is on the specs for the design, and seems commonly used for the application. I have considered the and have concers over its rating as the contact rating is 3A and my coil is pulling around 3.5A. My experience of using these in industry is that they are under rated and that it should handle 3.5A ok. I guess an electronic ignition circuit will overcome this. The coil info looks interesting thanks again.
