Anyone prepared to share photos of themselves from 'the decade that style forgot'? Not me!

Dave

I've got a Spar t-shirt football team photo. Very stylish.

Here's a fancy one, seems to be for mach 3

08/08/2023 18:00:18

I think there are parallel port adapters about ported onto a usb connection

No guarantee that it will communicate 100% though, you have to buy and try

Thread: Good work with a worn out lathe.
08/08/2023 17:55:36

I would think that anyone who can use an imperfect lathe would already have a lot of experience

They would use compensation techniques and strategies in the course of a job, some of which would be quite ingenious

But the main element would be the knowledge and experience of the user

Mach 3 is still about as far as I am aware, the steppers look like nema 23s 3amp jobs which are ok

a couple of controllers a power pack and a board all wired up and ready to go

Bound to be a few who would fight over it on ebay, especially since the build files are still available

Super Adept Thread 2023 By David-Clark 1

Curious title thread. He was really struggling the last I heard

Very recent story in FT Edit:

US government scientists have achieved net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the second time, a result that is set to fuel optimism that progress is being made towards the dream of limitless, zero-carbon power.

It's a bit of an Oppenheimer moment if it does happen

The only thing stopping us from chewing up and processing this entire planet is the cost of energy

The only thing stopping an unlimited megawar is the availability of surplus energy

Thread: Just how good is AI?
07/08/2023 19:54:17

Calling it AI is a misnomer, it's just really fast hardware developed from the graphics industry

The software is the key and that's still a slow development slog

Eventually someone will develop software which can write software

and that's the point at which things start to really shift

I've only ever seen one really good development emulator and that was for DOS

You can see how Jason drew the original block in the smartest position, thinking ahead

But it's still too advanced if you can't do simple plans yet Nigel

Leadscrews have always been an industry accepted special case where automation was king

many UK hobby lathe makers simply purchased them from a few specialist UK manufacturers to reduce the cost of the high end manufacturing required

It's what you do with it that people are interested in

Thread: I found this old car but what is it?
07/08/2023 13:16:45

Well the engine is a straight 6 with the water pipe out the front

Can't say I ever worked on one of those, the strut tops look ford but didn't they all look like that, mcpherson strut

If it is a Ford it must be the only one in the world where the strut tops didn't rust before the rest of the vehicle

They were a major MOT fail item in the 1970s and 80s

I got zapped by a sat cable once, only a small zap but it was there

Apparently the old cables were live, don't know about nowadays

Screw threading has never been an issue at any point because everybody is on a level playing field

07/08/2023 10:06:21

An els screw thread is no different to a change wheels screw thread

I don't think there are many screw thread competitions anyway

07/08/2023 10:01:23

That's just the design work

You could enter it in the Digital Art category

Thread: Use of coal, oil and fossil fuels

Once we get off-planet we'll be fine

We need a Frank Whittle 2 to invent warp drive then Musk-Intergalactic for transport

All the gadgets and gizmos like fusion and crop splicing are only going to delay the inevitable for a species stuck in a glass bowl slowly getting grottier and grottier until it becomes uninhabitable
