heat bricks from a storage heater are fine if you are just soldering small stuff but a disaster for bigger stuff - they absorb heat instead of reflecting it so you spend a lot of energy heating them up. Set from CUP as suggested, I use vermiculite bbq board, still absorbs some heat but not a lot, bullet proof in terms of temp resistance. Availible ont bay at £10 each |

You havnt said what flux you are using but I dont use easyflo on anything, ever, as it burns out so much quicker that T5. |

dont know about hobbyweld but in my commercial boiler business I only ever use oxy propane...no messing with fire bricks to keep it all hot, no multi stage silver solder, direct and intense localised heat. |
Thread: Loctite type question |
26/11/2017 15:01:55 |
I wouldnt put anything with the loctite threadlock logo anywhere near a 12ba nut or bolt, even their very weak bearing retainer is likely to cause the thread to break, I know this from experience. Try a minute dab of clear silicone sealant first is my advice and I use loctite products almost daily. |

Thread: Workshop Heating |
25/11/2017 17:08:23 |
I switched from electric to gas heating in the workshop only yesterday, in order to heat it quicker and hopefully a bit cheaper. It didnt go quite to plan! I have quick release gas lines for oxy and propane at various places in the shop so I can unplug, move and replug my gas torch as required. So I thought i'd just pop a fitting onto the gas inlet for the heater and use a spare gas inlet - simple? I plugged it in, connected the small space heater and turned it on. Oh my goody lord, the flame came out of the heater a good four feet, it was so intense that I didnt dare go near it and feared the items near it would very quickly catch fire so I ran outside and shut the gas off. The moral of this srory is to not run a 300 millibar space heater off a 2 bar gas line! I was shaking for ages. |
Thread: CCGT 060202 or CCGT 060204 |
25/11/2017 10:17:34 |
I use the 202 for copper boiler tube and find it 'sharper' than the 204 and less likely to grab. I have broken a few inserts but you have to do something pretty brutal to damage them. I buy the very cheap ones and they perform perfectly on my slow running L5, so much so that I now use nothing else. |

Has anyone made this to the plans - had a look over it today and it sort of looks like its been cobbled together rather than designed? Ive decided not to build it but am interested in what others might think. |
Thread: A model engineer gone wrong? |
18/11/2017 20:34:13 |
To highlight the massive differences in gun culture (and this is the truth) when visiting family in West Chester USA we went for a look at a new upmarket housing development. Being from the UK I was struck by the complete lack of boundry fences from one large house to another. Upon enquiring why there were non I was reminded that this area had an extremely low crime rate. I couldnt see the link ans was told very matter of fact that the lack of fencing enabled an almost uninterrupted line of fire. To them this was just plain common sense. I will stick to my fences , hedgerows and baseball bat thanks.

What you havnt mentioned is the material you are boring. Hard spots in cast can make a right mess of small boring jobs. |

Having just paid £35 for a decent mt2 reamer I now see a better solution to rejuvenating my knackered 50 year old tailstock taper - bore it out to 1" and heat shrink in one of the mt2 sleeves mentioned above. Thanks |

thanks all, got it running as true as it is likely to be given its age, the idea of a support for the overhang or even another vice seems like an excellent idea. Still looking for a fine feed damper, thinking of a bottle jack?
